    Maybe not, but mascons can make the gravitational field around a body so "lumpy" that you have use weird orbits to keep from crashing into the thing, as the Apollo crews had to do.

    Yeah, but that isn't really relevant to how we got into this. :) The original assertion was that we couldn't be sure of the surface gravity without knowing the planets internal composition, whereas the average surface gravity is not altered an iota by any of these things.
