Being a black girl that graduated with a 3.5 GPA and took all the honors classes I, I have to contribute my success to having parents that emphasized education and teachers that helped to encourage that. But mostly, it was my home and general community that kept enforcing what my teachers said, my aunt in particular, who taught in inner-city schools and once taught a group of fifth graders in which the only students that could read at grade level were a pair of Chinese twins who had just immigrated to Oakland two years before and spent most of their lives before that working in sweatshops.

And as I've mentioned many times before, I was thankfully born to a mom that wasn't bound and tied to the 'hood and when my uncle and aforementioned aunt offered her an opportunity to move up to the town I live in now and give me and my brother a chance to grow up without that hood influence of "Ejumacations are 4 whitey" bullshit, she took it.

I do think many black kids grow up with parents that tell them not to expect much. Perhaps it was done to lessen their kids' pain as children, but when one lives in an area where teen pregnancy is high and the number of fathers on the block can be counted on one hand and the only wealthy people are doing it illegally, I guess it's easy to take up that mentality that the world owes you something.

I only saw two black guys in Maine, and they were working the aisle on the plane out of Bawsten.

Oh, and there was the black dude in a cowboy hat singing folk & country at the Sea Dog microbrewery in Bangor.

It's an assessment of the policy toward them, and you're being very mischievous to try and say that it's an assessment of them, regardless of how badly phrased it is.

This is pure unadulterated arrogance on his part. Similar to candidates campaigning on platforms that if they are elected they will be curing spinal chord injuries through embryonic stem cell research and etc.

I find it hilarious that he goes from "no silver bullet" to "they're all going to jail."

There are many solutions to problems that are not a silver bullet. I can't imagine what this kind of thinking would do for a president:

"Well, I guess we can't fix our education problems this instant, so let's just do away with the school system all together."

They should be in prisons.

Last I checked, one must be proven guilty of committing a crime before entering prison and one must associate with violent persons/participate in violence to have a high likelihood of being killed violently.

There is no conspiracy to imprison or kill young black men. That larger numbers of them wind up in prison or dead from violence is a direct consequence of their own choices.

If that's what you think, that's what you should be arguing since it's closer to what Edwards is claiming - a policy to criminalise young black men.

It's not completely without foundation in my view. Drug laws in particular tend to target them (and other people from a similar socioeconomic background) to an unjustified extent.

How the hell do drug laws make it tougher on blacks? Around here very major drug bust is whites for meth labs. I can't remember the last time blacks were in the paper for drugs. 99 percent of the time blacks are getting busted for armed robbery. Don't see how you can slant armed robbery to be race related. Cops don't have time for petty stuff like weed, coke, or whatever druggies are into around here.

If you're already breaking one law, might as well break another and steal the money for that "petty stuff", especially with the illegality of it pushing up the price.

In the mid-west, I've no doubt that majority of drug bust are from whites. Out in California, especially in the area where I was born, drug dealing is very much a heavily black deal. I had a cousin that was killed for not paying up--a good kid that was Valedictorian of his class four years before he died, and my aunt pretty much encouraged that shit by taking his money to redo her house. Cunt.
