Seriously, it was good, interesting, and original, and definately made you think. I'm not going to give a rundown, as it would be really hard to do with this film. Nothing bothered me about it, I just wish I was a bit smarter. My wife and I were 180 degrees on what the ending meant. Which in the end may have been Aronofsky was going for all along. Basically it's the last five minutes of 2001, in an hour and thirty five minutes.
It was the crappiest movie I think i've ever seen......I had no fucking clue what was going on the whole time......this is how it went for me........Oooh a monkey, pretty lights, aww she died, Hugh Jackman looks like crap bald......and that was about it for me.
Saw this movie tonite. I thought it was beautiful. I understand what it was about, but as for the literalness of various parts of it, that is open to subjective interpretation. Which is fine. I'll probably see this one again at some point, and I won't be surprised if I take away a different outlook the next time. But having had a friend of my wife die young from long term, mestastacized (sp?) breast cancer about a year and a half ago, I found that a lot of the food for thought in this movie was stuff I've chewed on before.
^ Yes, Tech, we know. Anyway, looking forward to this one a lot. People have already compared it to 2001, and the reactions here indicate the same. Since I loathed 2001 too when I was younger but can see the genius in it now I guess I'll like this one too. Looking forward to those special FX they used (microphotography). No CGI in this movie. Should be fantastic on a really big screen.
Just put it in your god damned signature and have done with it. When was the last time you went to the cinema?
When the sound no longer came from the guy playing on the piano in the room. Techman swore off the talkies that day.
There's that 'p' word again. It doesn't apply here. This movie doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. It's a flick about love, death, grief, and obsession. It is visually and aurally beautiful, and designed to make you think. Not all of it makes clear sense, but that's okay. 2001 didn't either, and people love that one to death as well. I can fully understand why some people didn't/won't like this one. It has some of the same qualities as Solaris while being completely different. The only think that people have a legit gripe with is that the trailer, which was uber-cool, is almost completely misleading.
Nope, it's not pretentious, just the director's vision. And agreed about the trailer, I liked this movie, but I'd still like to see that one too.
I thought about that, (what you had in the spoiler), but ultimately decided it wasn't important to the story. Not only that, it would have removed any doubt about the literal reality of that portion of the story. I think he wanted people to wonder whether it was real, or in his head in the present day.
I'll try to come up with an intelligent post on my interpretation of the movie, till then, an interview with the director can be found here.
Marso, did you like Solaris? Keep in mind this will allow me to judge whether or not your movie picks are worth a grain of salt.
We talking original Solaris or the new Solaris? I haven't seen the original, but the new one is absolute shit, in my humble opinion.
[?=My interpretation:] Present day Jackman and Weisz are the 'true' story, with the Conquistador thingy being Weisz's written story from the beginning; a classical approach to her husband's obsession in saving her. Future Jackman in that energy sphere is Jackman's interpretation of the story which he finished (because Weisz told him to) as he mourned and imagined the passing of his wife. That's the interpretation I got. I gave the movie a B+ in story and A+ in creativity (specially the spaceship). [/?]
Let me put it this way: I understood Solaris, and without having ever read the book. And I thought it was one of the first times we ever saw George Clooney actually act. Other than that I was strictly lukewarm to it as a movie.
I remember not likeing the movie, but I don't remember being confused by it. I don't remember anything about it any more other then I was bored out of my mind.
Well, the Fountain has more 'going on' than Solaris did. I can't really predict whether you'd like it or not. Depends on how much of a deep, contemplative thinker you are.
Okay, here is my review of it: Complete major mind fuck! Like, WTF?!?!? There are movies that take me awhile to figure out, but this one had me guessing the whole time. First off, the special effects were beautiful. It seems like something you would see out of a dream, or a nightmare - I can't decide which yet. So it gets an A for that. Then there is the story, and again, I have to exclaim out loud: WTF?!?!? I've avoided all spoilers for this, and I was going into this knowing virtually nothing about the movie, and after sitting through it, I think I know just a little bit more. Anyways, in summary, Techman, Uncle Albert, stay away from this movie, because I can guarantee you, you'll be fucking pissed if you have to pay $12 bucks to see this. If you liked movies like Solaris and Lost in Translation, chances are you might enjoy this movie. I think it can be easily labelled as one of those movies that Hollywood makes just to show the world how smart they think they are. But I would disagree. I think the director and/or writer definitly try to tell people something with this movie, but in terms of the execution, it's not going to work for the average person because they are just not going to get it. But at least it doesn't come off as pretentious, like some other movies of this type. I really can't give a final rating to this film, because it's one of those films that defy convention. It's not science fiction, it certainly ISN'T action, and it's not a chick flick or comedy, or drama. I would classify this as a philosophical movie that tries to introduce American audiences to some very old eastern beliefs and concepts, but it fails because it doesn't spell it out in a formula that is easy to grasp or understand. At least for someone that has just been newly exposed to these beliefs. I would recommend reading up a little bit about Buhdism or Hinduism before watching this movie. The film is definitly an acid trip, but as far as that goes, it would fall into the catagory of a good acid trip rather than a bad one. Final Score: no rating...or in otherwords: :flow2: (Now I'm going to read this whole thread and see if I'm totally off in what I thought this movie was about!) Evenflow, Marso I'm kinda surprised you liked this movie.
