Just a bit of fun to distract from the usual American political threads. I was thinking the other day about how I like a beef wellington and can enjoy it despite the duxelle being made of mushroom, but that mushroom in any other way I just can't stand. Can't even put it in my mouth. Same goes for beetroot. We have a show on in Britain this time of year called I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here in which the contestants often have to eat vile things. Camel dicks, crocodile anus, kangaroo bollocks that sort of thing. I can honestly say that I would rather eat a roo bollock than a beetroot if given the choice, I despise them so much.

What food can you simply not face putting in your mouth? Bad quality fast food chain products don't count (as in you like pizzas but then say you won't eat from a particular pizza place because you think the quality is bad).

Squash. Your lot calls them courgettes like the French, right?
Vile texture, and yet pumpkin pie/shakes is tolerable, and zuchini is benign in stews and the like.

Zucchini is great used as a pasta substitute. Cut into thick spaghetti sized strings, sprinkled with salt and left to drain for 15 minutes before blanching for 30 seconds to warm then serving with a small amount of rich sauce on top. :D

"Camel dicks, crocodile anus, kangaroo bollocks that sort of thing."
or as I like to call it "Tuesday!"

Seriously with all the tasty parts of critters & plants why eat these? I don't get it. As for baily and his zucchini as pasta substitute it seems like a lot of work when you can just use pasta! Granted zucchini is lower calorie & more nutritious so that's a benefit.

here is a list of foods I can't stand:
beef liver....again, cows have a lot of tasty parts so what's the point? My grandmother/mom made liver & onions and it's nasty no matter how it's made.
chicken liver....great catfish bait! So why not just eat the catfish (tasty!) that eats the liver? I'm sure there's a bible parable about this.
asparagus....maybe it's an acquired taste - it's popular in Europe I do know that - let's keep it there.
skim milk....okay not a food but work with me here. It's amazing how two percent (my preferred milk) of anything can make a HUGE difference!
cottage cheese....nauseatingly abhorrent. My mom puts it in lasagna! :yuck: I use ricotta myself - sorry mom but societies advance you know!
swiss cheese....on par with cottage cheese, except I don't know any use for it except on sandwiches, so it's almost totally worthless.
premixed peanut butter & jelly.....sounds convenient in theory, but they never get the ratio right. I can't believe it's still around!
vinegar flavored potato chips....talk about messing up a good thing! Sort of like with Lays potato chips I can't eat "just one" of these!
beets....beats me why anyone would eat them other than under a doctor's recommendation.

As a serious response to the thread, after close to two decades as a vegetarian meat is right up there. When I feel like something junk foody I will happily scoff down some quorn or other meat substitute thing (but they aren't something I like to rely on) but the smell of real meat (especially stuff like steak) is almost nauseating.

Beets are just foul, and nothing can be done to them to make them edible. Peaches, to me, always taste very metallic and nasty.

But what a rejoinder you'll have.

"Go suck on a camel dick!"
    "I have. Your move."

Anyway, I despise mushrooms. I've tried them baked, boiled, broiled, fried, natural, grilled, sautéed, and I just do not like them.

I’ll eat pretty much any fruit, vegetable, bean, nut, grain, or edible mushroom.

I like dairy products and I like eggs.

However I stay away from raw meat, organ meats, and insects.

I’ll occasionally have pig or cow meat but I’m trying to limit my intake of mammal meat and stick with more fish, seafood or tofu.

As for beets, it’s like Sisko says... they are a very misunderstood vegetable. Like eggplant, brussel sprouts, and certain other vegetables they need to be thoroughly cooked and then spiced/curried.

    Eating them raw is awful.

No, fucked up is when they're still attached to a living camel.

Seriously though any form of liver is a no no for me, it's psychological in that I can't get it's original function out of my head whilst chewing.....

Marshmallow's not exactly on my menu either for some reason.

I can’t really think of any foods that I won’t eat but there are some that I’d rather not.

I don’t care for fruit unless it’s fermented or in a pie and putting nuts in a cake or cookie ruins them IMHO.

I remember in Poland in the fall people go nuts over these huge mushrooms that are everywhere. They are picking them left & right. Some Polish air traffic controllers we were working with fried up a bunch one day, but I'm not a serious mushroom fan. Sliced on a pizza is about it for me.

When I think back to Poland I remember strawberry pickers selling them by the roadside and people slamming on the brakes to buy them :D.

That was some time ago mind you but the strawberries were excellent :)

I like Poland! I've been there several times. Except one time on the bus ride back to Germany I bit into a frozen candy bar and broke a tooth.
Nothing about that weird BTW - a definite "had to be there" moment.

That's interesting. The metallic part, specifically. I wonder if it's similar to the genetic thing that makes cilantro taste like soap to some people...

It tastes like soap to my mother, and I have her DNA, so I can only assume.
Haven't wanted to taste it to find out, really.
Who the hell wants to taste dish soap in their food?

Butternut squash is great in stews, I do a beef and butternut squash one which adds a lot of sweetness. Going to try adding radishes in too, hoping it won't be too sweet.
