Okay, just had this idea after thinking about that CCTV thread. There seem to be a few people here on WF (Cass, ecky, myself) who don't especially like the idea of being watched by the government and are a bit paranoid. So, let's discuss "strategies". :bergman:

    I'll start:
I store all my important data on an external hard disk. That hard disk is encrypted with True Crypt. About twenty characters - numbers, letters etc. :bergman:

So - got any other stuff you do? I think Cass does something with her mobile phone?

    Let's share. :P

I discovered the agent that was tracking me, bought naked pictures of her from her heroin addicted husband, and posted them online, telling everyone it was me. :soholy:

Wouldn't telling generally anonymous people on the internet how you encrypt and protect your data be counterproductive? :D

currently not much, but on my 'to do' list is to see if its possible for me to automate encryption/decryption of virtual machines by creating a wrapper around VMWare.

i can have a set of heavily encrypted virtual hard drives then.

Yeah not really. Just because you know how it's done doesn't mean you're able to crack it. ;)

    Also - sharing's caring. :soholy:

yeah, but the paper and metal they use to make the money is cloned from the flesh and bones of the roswell aliens.

everytime you handle cash, it stores all your memories and thoughts, to be read by the bank and sent to the government :calli:

Cash. No cash withdrawal from machines outside my own town.
    Prepaid anonymous cell phone.
    2 sets of fake papers.
No 'net connection in my own name.
    Fooling Google with false accounts.
No cookies but from trusted sites.
No phoning home from my computer.
Anonymous PO box, rerouting my mail to my bro's business.
Actively avoiding the supermarket across the street because they installed 25 (!!) CCTVs lately. Let them know too.
Will stop driving on highways when and if road pricing comes.

Stuff like that. Of course it's not always possible but then, one does what one can do.

No. Good encryption software is open. Prevents security holes and backdoors. There are only a few methods (Starfish etc) and they are all well documented. It's ironic but encryption has no secrets ;)

Hm, mostly do that too - but then I'm really only in two places.
That one's not possible anymore though, right? You've got to use an old phone or get one illegally, IIRC. You've got to register to get a SIM - because of drug dealers and shit.
Do tell - how'd you get those? And are they any good?
I mean, sure, there's "fake ID" and then there's fake ID. The one you use to get into clubs and bars and shit and the other you use to actually fool customs. :soma:
    :garamet:
That one's kinda hard to do though.
    Meh, fuck Google IMHO.
I have a G-Mail account but don't use it for anything. Do elaborate on how and what you do though...
I don't even know about that... :soma:
    *goes to check*
    Edit: HOLY. CRAP. :soma:
Is there free, OS software out there to do that?
How'd you set that one up? And Rerouting through your bro doesn't seem like such a hard-to-find link. ;)
This is weird - I'm the guy living in Switzerland.
Yah, I'll have to get rid of that "customer-you-get-points-for-free-stuff-but-we-register-all-your-sales" card sooner or later. :garamet:

Yes it is. All providers offer it here. They try to persuade you to register but it's not necessary. For example: www.yesss.at -> can simply buy that in a supermarket and stick it into an unlocked phone. There ya go.

Let's just say that I have never needed ID to get into a club or something :diacanu:
Not if you own one third of a house with tenants. Commercial tenants ;)
Software firewall not made by Microsoft  And the router provides protection from incoming. It's not industrial level security but good enough to keep WinDVD and its cohorts from reporting for duty. Sensitive data goes on a USB stick, and that goes with me.
It's not about actually hiding, it's about my address and data not ending up in a trillion databases. Hiding is ... different.
I'd rather slit my throat than getting one of those.
Much more interesting to drive it on smaller roads ;)

Don't think you can get them 'round here anymore. Will have to look into it. :)
Also - how do I know whether my phone's unlocked (I'm assuming mine isn't - got one of those "one-year-contract-and-we'll-give-you-a-phone-for-almost-nothing" deals - on the plus side it's now March and I got the phone in October and so far haven't paid anything :diacanu: )?

Ah, the boring kind then. :diacanu:
    :nono:
    Stealing wireless is evil!

Eh, it's not mine. Belongs to my parents. ;)

Nope, not stealing. Having a deal. They provide wireless for the whole house, they get special conditions with the rent. It's a good deal because they have tech guys that are on call 24/7 :techman:

Yes, funny enough that my mother is completely unconcerned about these things too. She'll trade her privacy for 'security' and a cheap frying pan any day. At least I got her to get an unregistered phone number, but only with a lot of help from annoying opinion researchers...

As for the phone, yours is most certainly locked. There are services that unlock them but also tons of manuals on how to do it yourself. Just google it. It's usually some kind of number combination or something. Sometimes you might need a little helpful program so beware of trojans and stuff. Lots of fakes around.

Also, the phone company will unlock it for you after the contract has expired. Costs around 5 euros here.

They don't mind you downloading stuff then? :soholy:
Identity cards aren't registered though, IIRC. Went into Sweden with my passport and left with my ID or something so I'm probably still in Sweden. (actually, no - I've had to use the passport a few times afterwards)

My father didn't like it, IIRC.

Got a box of unused Sim cards, they used to give them away outside of the phone stores (one2one, virgin) years ago.
