Inside the heartbreaking conservatorship battle of a 'Star Trek' legend

Tucked away at the end of a secluded cul-de-sac, Nichelle Nichols’ Woodland Hills home was a testament to her boundary-breaking career spanning more than 70 years. Nichols lined walls and shelves with photos of herself as Lt. Uhura on the original “Star Trek” series, memorabilia from her legions of fans and documentation of her contributions to NASA’s recruitment of women and people of color in the 1970s.

The home was Nichols’ pride and joy, say those close to the star. She purchased it in 1982 for $12,000 and meticulously planned its details, from her plush, oversize furniture to the garden where she planted roses to the neighboring property she purchased in 1994 to use as a guesthouse and workspace for projects.

Questions around the fate of Nichols’ home — who lives in it and what happens to it — have been central to an ongoing, years-long legal battle over the finances and care of the beloved TV star, who friends and family say is financially drained and struggling with dementia.

A three-way fight over Nichols’ fate involves her only child, Kyle Johnson, who is also her conservator; her former manager Gilbert Bell; and a concerned friend, Angelique Fawcette.

I read about this earlier. Between her, Stan Lee and Britney, conservatorships is an issue that might need to be addressed. Particularly in cases with people who are suffering from dementia and are easy targets for exploitation.

And I was right. Her home is 2.2 million dollars. So the go fund me set up by her conservator was a legitimate source of mockery.

But she doesn't have control of her home, it's her agent, who also seems to have control of many of her assets. Her son is trying to get them back and has been for a while now.

No. Her son has controlled the home since 2019. He sold it recently for $2.2 million. He’d also like some of your money. Go fund him!

He's not the one who started the GoFundMe
    As for the house
If he's telling the truth, then the court records ought to be easy enough to find.

It’s hard to admit you’re wrong. I know. I interact with wrong people all the time and it’s just so heartbreaking to watch them struggle to stay positive.

One of her last, if not THE last, acting appearances she made was in the 50th anniversary of TOS episode of the fan audio drama "Tomorrow's Excelsior" a few years. (Full disclosure: I am co-producer of Starship: Excelsior)
I didn't get to meet her, but the word I got was that she was obviously in failing health. However, being a professional she toughed it out and gave a strong performance as the linchpin of the episode, along with Walter Koenig, Robin Curtis, the late Jack Donner and other actors who appeared in the various shows and movies. It's heartbreaking to see what's happened to her. :(

"Might be"? There's no question about it. People routine push for conservatorships over far less all the time. People like Britney and Stan Lee and Brian Wilson way back in the 80s (arguably the only one who ever came close to being in need of one) are visible enough for people to bring attention to the issue, but regular people go through it too.

Keep this up and you might be as "edgy" as FF. It's not a lot to aspire to, I'll admit, but for you, it'll be progress. I mean, you're already doing Dayton's thing of just responding to people rather than quoting them in hopes that your comments will be missed and this somehow makes you a "winner." Need I point out, oh, who am I kidding, of course I do, that Nichelle's house was sold last week, and that at least $400K (probably more) went straight to the reverse mortgage company, instead of into the family's pockets?

Honestly, I'm surprised why you've continued to keep up your "edgy" schtick that you so frequently try to pull. You're not nearly as good at it someone like Castle, despite being more coherent about it, so why don't you try something new?

Britney was screwed from the moment she was born. Both her parents worked hard to exploit her for all they could. When her sister got pregnant, I joined the folks yukking about how stupid she was, but after having seen what's happened to Britney, I have to wonder if her sister didn't see it as an escape valve so that she didn't get trapped into the same hellscape that Britney did.

Stan Lee's case is more complex, as his problems seem to stem from him being the sole caretaker of his terminally ill wife, and that wound up isolating him from friends and family. Because of that, folks in the business world took advantage of him. When his wife died, they'd been married for 69 years, I don't care if you've got the same kind of mental acuity as a 25-year old, you lose someone you've known for most of a human lifetime, that's going to fuck with you hard and make you vulnerable to all kinds of shitheads.

Wilson seems to have suffered from some form of schizophrenia, and until fairly recently, the drugs to treat it haven't been that great. I've met a couple of people who've seemed to be perfectly normal, and it's only later that I found out that they were being treated for schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a particularly nasty disease because unless you really know a person who is untreated, they can engage in behavior patterns that seem "kinda quirky, but not really serious" when they think that they're at risk of actually being treated for schizophrenia. If you know them, then you can spot the subtle personality changes that indicate something is really wrong that others might miss. Or, they might be so comfortable around you, that they drop their guard and start screaming about their hallucinations of space aliens murdering people in the same room with you (even though it's only you and the schizophrenic in that room).

From personal experience, conservatorships aren't easy to get. Nor are they cheap. So, while I don't doubt they're more common than most people think, it's not something that can easily be invoked, even when there's an obvious problem.

Actually, he's does well when he just posts insults. When he attempts to actually join in a conversation, or, in this case, start one, he fails miserably.

Wow. We all make mistakes. Once I crossed the street on a red. My bad.

And you once “donated” money to Nichelle Nichols grifting conservators. It’s cool. Learn from it and move on…

Why the quotes around "donated"? And what's your evidence that they were grifting when they started the GoFundMe? And what lesson should I learn from it? That if I'm a decent human being you'll promptly shit on me for doing so?

If her sister got knocked up by her own volition to get outta showbiz, that would be a huge step up from the still persistent rumor about Dan "Foot Fetish" Scheinder taking advantage of her. It's just a more high profile case of when kids with fanatic sport parents tank their grades to get benched. :(

That said, JL may also be in on the grift and if so, she can fuck off too on that.
