I know a few of the kids on here use bittorrent like me to watch such fine shows as lost and 24. I've never had real problems with video playback since I learned what a codec was as a teenager, and thought life was simple.

Nowadays, every once in a while I wait hours for a file to download, then when I go to play it back I get a message saying media player can't open it. That's obviously annoying but I go and get another version and life goes on.

Tonight with Lost I'm wondering if it's something far more insidious. As I attempt to open the .avi file in any of the available players (Microsoft, Real, Winamp) I get a "we're sorry this program has to close, would you like to send an error report?" messages!

A quick browse of some torrent sites shows *this* specific video file is the primary, and indeed at the standard 350 megs it appears to be the only one out there. Obviously I refuse to believe the thousands upon thousands of people downloading this file are running into the dead end I am or a better one would be posted.

Is there something really obvious I'm missing? I googled "problems viewing xvid" and made sure to download the latest version of that, 1.2, but no help. A few weeks ago I went to media player 11 thinking that would be a problem solving step but all I got was fancy new menus. I use the delightful all in one codec that until recently hasn't failed me.

In the meantime I am downloading the 700 meg version of the episode overnight, even though it will run choppy on my ghetto ass computer. Woe is me IMHO. :(

Go with VLC, it's fantastic. Allows to you adjust things like the video aspect ratio as well.

Amazing! The VLC played the fucking file just fine (I assume the codec pack would have worked too Xerafin, just tried it in order of responses). And to think I had to wait until this afternoon to watch Lost when if only I had known about this player I would have been able to see Kate in her underwear last night.

Beaucoup de rep to Pylades IMHO.
