Oh wow, this got burried. Anyway, awesome movie that needs to be seen in theaters IMO. It is subbed and that might be somewhat annoying, but it is produced in Japan from what I see, so the story is very easy to follow, but also Japanese themed. Selecting the aftermath of WW2 makes for a really good storyline about survival in the tragic aftermath of war so we can follow the human protagonist through their story and the story of their town. That builds into the plot in a very Japanese heroic sort of way, which I think will get american and other cultures all hyped up. It really draws in the regular people when they do it like this, rather than being a bunch of scientists and military elites fighting godzilla. I loved this. However, maybe someone can help, what does the minus one stand for?
The explanation that I see everywhere is that Japan at the end of WW@ was at zero by every measure...then Godzilla shows up and knocks them down even further, thus below zero, i.e. Minus 1
and yes, this is one where when literally everyone says this is amazing you can put aside your cynicism. IT IS.
It's remarkable that this may be the only movie I've ever seen and then read widespread reaction to for almost a month and seen ZERO negative comments. At all. The only one in which the term "universal praise" seems to apply.
This makes all those big budget American Godzilla/Kong movies look ridiculous. The human characters in those films are so cringey and annoying… But this one has the perfect balance between telling a human, personal story with conflicted characters as well as being a visually impactful big monster movie. I think setting this in the backdrop of post WW2 Japan is so fitting and Godzilla is just a pure destructive force like he was in the original movie… He is not the anti-hero/savior he became over time in later movies. No other monsters… no King Kong, no Mothra, no Mechagodzilla, no Ghidorah… just an elegantly simple movie with good characters and without all the other MonsterVerse nonsense.
Also it’s interesting that the sequel to Oppenheimer could win an award on the same night as the first film in the series……
have to throw some more money at that one. It really re-awakened a love for godzilla that had lied dormant for a long time. I am pretty sure the movie with ferris bueller put my godzilla fangirl to sleep.
