Today I discovered google maps looking like this, what the fuck:

It is also now slow and clunky in the zoom, does not show level of zoom as a slider, and I'm pretty sure other features have been removed which I will discover when I go looking for them.

How can a company developing something like this new iteration of google maps not realise, how can they not not see, as they go on with development, that they are fucking up a program and MAKING IT SHIT compared to how it is so far?

There's an option under the help menu--not the option menu--to use the old style Google maps. Finding it and getting the setting to stick is well worth your while

Indeed, the street view is completely different too, on my home computer. My work computer still has the old version.
So yes, I'll try to adjust the settings at home.

Of course, Google generally only lets that remain an option for a few months before making the new look universal...

It took me a bit to get used to the new controls, but I really like the new version now. Much more intuitive, much more informative.

The irony being, this finally pushed me over to Bing maps.

Bing maps has it's merits, but it's still about five years behind on the satellite views here on Fort Gordon. In five years vegetation (new growth in formerly burned areas, old forests that just got burned) and topographic features (old roads now covered up, new roads created) change drastically here in The South with our long growing seasons. So for my purposes (scouting/hunting) Bing gets me in the ball-park until I can get boots on the ground.

I'm going to have to disagree. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. It shouldn't have to take a while to get used to the new controls. The older version works quite well and is definitely, at least to me, the more intuitive version. If you're going to do a major overhaul of a widely used interface that works well you should be doing it because significant new functionality requires a different interface. You should never do it just because you think the new interface is better or because of minor tweaks to functionality. If your roll-out doesn't include a tutorial on how to do things you couldn't do before then it just shouldn't happen.

I tried MapQuest for the first time in years, but that is so clunky it made me want to go kill a hobo.

I don't find the new version to be a problem so far as simple use goes. But I like to use some of the mapping tools now and then, and I find the new options mystifying.

Which would be fine if they added a "hobo view" feature.

    Use OpenStreetMaps.

Also, the new Google Maps doesn't have features I use, or they're buried so I haven't figured it out without switching back to the old format: Satellite view witOUT the labels, and Terrain view.

+1 for OSM. I find it both funny and sad though that Google has been pulling from OSM to update their maps.
