At Ron Paul's request, I decided a do-over was necessary. Sorry, anna! We're cool, right? Desperate families and friends of party-goers missing after huge Oakland warehouse blaze killed up to 40 plead for information about the whereabouts of their loved-ones
I'm gonna try pumpkin pie from scratch this year. With fresh ginger, since I've had so much around from all the oddness with my stomach. If I can find a cheap spice grinder, maybe I'll just get those cinnamon sticks from the Mexican stores on the cheap and grate that, too. (* waves to @gturner *)
I'm not sure how I got into pumpkin pie, though, since my predominantly black family have always been sweet potato pie folks. Took some over to my paternal half-brother's place one year where it sat untouched (hey, I ain't mad, more for me!) and when I called my mom to tell her about it, she's like, " well, actually...."
Come on folks, it's mean to talk about pie. That is some kind of trigger that takes the trolls out of their safe space.
True story: once my wife served pumpkin cheesecake to French friends (we lived in France at the time). They couldn't even pretend to try it. The idea was vomitous to them. Don't ever serve pumpkin cheesecake if there are any French people in the room.
They said the combination of sweet, with cheese, with veg (the pumpkin) was unpalatable or words to that effect. This was the recipe. It came from Gourmet Magazine, and we moved to France the beginning of 1991.
I'm not a big fan of pumpkin, usually just have one small slice of the pie at Thanksgiving, but I would never reject a desert served by a hostess.
I'm canning some red beans for red beans and rice right now. Here's the red beans cooking. They're in the canner now.
It's not difficult to make. Store bought/frozen isn't as nice. Try making one next time. If you had an active role making it it tastes better.
As a NYer who grew up with Junior's cheesecake, my thought is this: You don't mess with perfection. Cheesecake is cheesecake, and Junior's is it. It doesn't need cherries, blueberries, strawberries, or (pumpkin? Are you fuckin' kidding me?) any other frou-frou (although even Junior's has learned to cater to the Easily Bored mob). Eat it slowly. Savor it. A little bit of heaven. And, as steve said, pumpkin pie ain't all that difficult. The key ingredient is patience.
That is certainly my preference with cheesecake. It's meant to be an uncomplicated and totally awesome dessert. Side note, the issue that the madam had with the idea of vegetables and desert was similar to an issue I once had regarding cheese and desert. Because I couldn't see how it might work, I lost many years to cheesecake and canoli free living.
Yeah. It's Cajun. It's got andouille, trinity, ham, and bacon. oh, and kidney beans. The secret ingredient is two cap fulls of crab boil. Shhhh.
my mom makes red beans and rice for my sisters every Christmas cause that's their comfort food. I don't really care for the kidney beans but I always pick out some chunks of sausage.
I used to make an excellent red beans and Rice, but when my wife was pregnant with our third kid, she found herself completely disgusted by it. Now I can't make it at all unless she is away for a few days, because even the smell of it still wants to make her vomit. And that was eleven years ago.
Ugh, I like pecans and I like pie, but I don't like those things together. The filling is all sugar and some people don't add enough nuts for my liking. @garamet , I've had pumpkin cheesecake before. If you get the chance, I'd try it at least once. It's one of the few items inspired by the recent pumpkin craze that I can actually eat.
