Fugging Microsoft. HALO 2 is being released on for the PC ( the only gaming platform worth a shit ) on May 22 but those rat-bastards at MS have made it so it will only run on Vista. From what I've seen, read and heard, Vista is a big bust. It doesn't look all that much better than XP and most folks I know who bought the Vista upgrade ended up de-installing it and going back to XP. Here's hoping some hacker figures out a way to patch HALO 2 for XP!
Vista is not a bust, it helps if you get your info from unbiased locations, everything I've read seen and heard says Vista is the best Windows yet (UAC excluded). If people you know are uninstalling it after installing I suspect one of three things. 1) They are installing it on crappy computers that can't run it. 2) They have ADD and don't want to learn Vista, it's not a carbon copy of XP. 3) They couldn't spend 5 minutes on the web learning how to turn off UAC, Vistas only true annoyance.
The problems Vista are experiencing now are similar to the ones XP had when it was released, however it is not suitable yet for a lot of people for various reasons. With games for example, most run worse under Vista because of a combination of driver issues and the simple fact that with Vista eating more resources there is less left for the game to use.
Well on my dell laptop I've had no problems. I'm not saying Vista is perfect by any means. I just post replies in these type threads to balance those who rush in slapping themselves in the head screamins about how horrible everything MS does is. Most will agree, they are pretty to spot.
Or 4, it has shitty driver support still due to hardware manufacturers not updating their drivers, so people can't use their printers or other peripheral devices.
So there's three needs for investment -- money/hardware, time and concentration, and some more time -- you've mentioned. What does Vista offer me in return?
So how is that MS or Vistas fault? Besides, what kind of oddball or archaic hardware are you using that default drivers don't work or the manufacturer hasn't made Vista drivers for it? Sorry, beta and developer versions have been out for months, if not over a year. If hardware manufacturers can't be bothered to update their shit, theres no reason to cry about MS or Vista.
Sure you can question whose fault it is but for most users it boils down to this: a) XP and Vista are both operating systems, meaning they are designed to operate your computer. b) Vista has more trouble operating some peoples hardware. With that being the case, XP is still a better option for them. Complaining about who is meant to fix the drivers is irrelevant for the end user who just wants things to work. That's like saying everyone should move to Linux, because it's cheaper and any problems with stuff not working is the hardware makers fault, not Linux's.
Because Vista's UI is rendered by the graphics card, Vista essentially unloads the UI when playing games. Thus, all the really resource-heavy changes aren't really going to affect performance all that much. That is, if the games were well-coded in the first place. Which, let's face it, often goes by the wayside.
I'm so tired of lazy coding. In shines bright in more and more games nowadays. Looking forward to Halo 3, for some odd reason, though. I never liked the first 2 all that much, but the new one has me pretty excited.
screw Halo 2 and screw microsoft. Part 1 was okay until you got to the cloned underground levels - talk about repetitive gaming... PC gamers were screwed out of part 2 because M$ wanted to use it to sell the Xbox, and now they're screwing PC gamers again because they want to use it to sell Vista.
The Halo series has been highly overrated from the start. What does it do that the Half Life or Unreal engine can't? If I owned a video game company, I'd seriously consider making my games Xbox exclusives, considering the fanboys will hype it up to ridiculous levels as to almost orgasm over a very average game.
I agree Scorp. The Halo series is far overrated. My concern, however, is that Microsoft will start doing more of this in the future. It will take years before Vista replaces XP as the de facto OS. We don't need MS shoving it down our throats right now.
Vista is the only way you'll be able to play Dx10 games, period. XP wouldn't have been able to. So if you want to play Dx10 games (or at least get the benefits of Dx10 for games), when they finally arrive at the end of the year or next, you'll need Vista anyway. Halo was an incredible series, on the XBox, even if I wasn't a big fan of it. Why anyone would want to play it on the PC, is beyond me. So many better FPS for the PC already, especially since Halo is dirt old.
