Oh, no - Maggie shot him over some candy. But everyone was a suspect because of his evil schemes which culminated in him BLOCKING OUT THE SUN!!!! :diablo::diablo::diablo:

Now the US government is tentatively backing something similar.

    https://www.politico.com/news/2023/...-suns-rays-to-slow-global-warming-ee-00104513

Well, instead of a big dish to cast an immense shadow over Springfield, the plan is to chuck a load of aerosolized material into the atmosphere that will block some of the sun's rays as a last resort if global temperature rises can't be fixed.

Yes, we're now at the point where we're having to consider blocking out the very thing that most life on the planet cannot live without, because we were too fucking stupid to explore other methods earlier.

Where have you been? They've been floating this idea since probably not long after that episode aired. Bill Gates is a big fan, as you can imagine.

Given how collossally fucked we are right now, it will probably become a good option in the near future.

Obviously there are severe risks. But absent any serious action to address emissions, they may be outweighed by the consequences of inaction.

looks like there are far less stupid risk ways of cooling...

cool and green roofs are a biggie.
likewise using pavers in place of asphalt

I'm kinda intrigued by cloud brightening, which might actually work without the risk of hastening an ice age.

The Fermi Paradox is the simple question the great physicist asked about life "out there"..."Where is everybody?" One answer that I'm starting to believe is true that "civilizations" always end up destroying themselves. :brood:

We're at 8 billion people now. We're going to be between 11 and 12 billion by the end of the century. All those people are going to need to be fed, so that means growing crops. Not to mention that all those people are going to need to be housed, need transportation, need jobs, and all of that. And here's the thing: all of those people want the same standard of living you and I have in the west today. We're not going to give up our lifestyle. They're going to want the toys like cell phones and TVs and all the crap we have around our houses made of plastics and heavy metals, so we're not getting rid of petroleum or strip mining any time soon. We don't want nuclear power, despite it being the cleanest and most efficient source we have, wind farms take up a ton of space and kill endangered birds like it's nothing, solar is inefficient and gets knocked out by the weather, coal and natural gas add CO2, geothermal and water power is only good in certain areas, and fusion will always be just 50 years away. So where does our power come from? And even if the West goes entirely pollution free, what do you do with places like China, India, and the rest of the developing world that is building right now and will be for the foreseeable future? Whatever the problems we have today are just going to get worse with population increases.

At the end of the day, it comes entirely down to this: we have far too many people on this planet to live cleanly. So what are our options? Enforced birth control? Death camps? Release a really nasty plague that kills off 95% of the population? Planned starvations? War?

The notion that the Earth is overpopulated is rooted in Eugenicism.

    https://www.sierraclub.org/washingt...opulation-myth-and-its-dangerous-connotations
    https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00324728.2021.2009013

There is more than enough food to feed everyone now, more than enough land for shelter, more than enough water, the resources are there, they're just being concentrated into the hands of the few. We live in an age of artificial scarcity, imposed upon the populace by those who benefit from the labor of others, giving them just enough to keep working, or threatening them with what they allow for people who don't have enough.

Blocking out the Sun will not halt the changing climate. The US military, for example, ranks as one of the largest polluters in the world:
    https://earth.org/us-military-pollution/
    https://www.popsci.com/environment/military-greenhouse-gas-emissions-data/

Cutting that $800+ billion budget would likely help, and that extra money could go to housing, food, education, and infrastructure. We have the means, it's the people who do not have the will also have the power.

We've been doing this for ages, and only just stopped in the past 3 years, with new maritime regulations on sulfur emissions. Doing it in a controlled fashion instead of the ad-hoc sulfur emissions of the shipping industry seems like a win. It's safer than not doing it. The biggest risk is that we stop doing it before we get CO2 emissions under control, which is what we're in the middle of experimenting with, and well, we got the North Atlantic temperature anomaly this year. Some care probably needs to go into exactly where they're deliberately spread, but the concept is sound.

I actually thought this was more an idea from The Matrix. You know the one where we were so worried about the machines winning we tried to block out the sun and destroy the environment in hopes that they could not generate enough solar power. This was pretty much an absurd doomsday plan we did in desperation, and now the Biden admin is saying lets see if we can do that rather than doing some actual regulations.

Thanks a lot Biden. No seriously, every day I see this shit I grow more and more happy with my choices of smoking and eating tons of garbage for over thirty years of my life. Stupid fucking kids should be stringing up the Biden Boomers and the trumpistas. Instead they are thinking Biden is going to save them. The fucking guy is never going to see the results of his actions, and you are letting people vote for him again. Enjoy your matrix future.

Gretta should be leading an army of teenage ecoterrorists who kill everyone over fifty, and every fucking republican, but all she does is whine like a fucking twat. Nothing lest will save the future generations. I am just riding this shit out because the human race deserves what they get for not culling the herd of the stupid.

Nature is coming for you and your kind. Physics and biology do not care about your feelings, and no god will save you from your fate. There will be no aliens fixing shit. The planet will not get to the point you think it will because it simply cannot handle all that shit. The human race will drown in their own waste and feces. They will suffer plagues and famine they cannot fix long before that. They will have their lavish lifestyle pulled from them and die emaciated and in pain in a slow torture as their own fluids poison their very existence.

This isn't a guess. This isn't a joke. This is the inevitable conclusion of every species that pollutes their environment to the point they die in their own waste. The earth will not provide for that future.

Of course, if you understand that and are just the sort of person who does not give a fuck and will have their now because fuck the future bitches who will have to live with your waste because you will long be dead before that debt gets paid, then OK. I actually do not have an argument against that. I am actually rooting for nature in this case because I think the only way human society survives is to learn from disaster and tragedy and that takes disaster and tragedy so hope humans survive and let the cruel and merciless beatings begin. Let us see if humans can overcome their own nature because the idea that every human life deserves to exist is wrong. We have to kill and destroy the idiots and disrespectful scum if we want to enjoy a lavish lifestyle. Animals are controlled by nature, and we are not yet above the animals because we do not kill the animals among us.
