In regards to Obama's tweet, it dawns on me that MLK's example is exactly what this country needs today. I hope that we can all embrace the ideals of non-violence in this nation's time of transition. To everyone committed to peace in our nation, thank you! Regardless of where you are on the political spectrum, this country needs more people like you!

    That's it. That's the post. :)

But, but leftforge told us last summer that non-violence never works. Which one is it?

I don't know. This is the kind of quote that makes people like me still wary about voting for democrats despite how batshit insane the republican party has become.

After viewing trump and white supremacy for four years you still think overwhelming power for whites is the way things should be and it scares you that brown people might be more equal in society?

Yers, in order to combat the overwhelming history of white supremacy in the US and the racism that has existed because of the uneven power structure that has existed since the formation of this nation we need to redistribute power and wealth from the oppressive positions that have existed. If that scares you it is because you are a racist. If the dem party scares you because they recognize that then you are a part of the problem.

The only reason to cower behind trump is you are a coward.

Now, since you admit you cannot compete on an even playing field, go back to the white trash heap. We do not need your help and your example.

First they came for the billionaires, and I did not speak out
Because I was not a billionaire.
Then they came for the corporations that pay no taxes, but I did not speak out
Because I was not a corporation.
Then they came for the for-profit health insurers, and I did not speak out
Because I was not a for-profit health insurer.
Then they came for the predatory lenders, the hedge-fund managers, and the millionaires.
But by the time they closed the offshore accounts of the corporations and the billionaires and did a little Teddy Roosevelt trust-busting on the predatory lenders and the hedge fund managers, they found they didn't even need the millionaires.
They had enough revenue to fix the infrastructure, provide universal health care and affordable education, and provide everyone with a living wage.
And all I had to do was :)

All it takes is a quote on twitter from a non-violent black preacher to make some people threaten uppity black people by claiming he will vote for trump to fix them for asking for equality.

I do wonder what the sock does when a black guy takes a knee. @Daedalus12 probably has the burning ash of his nikes in his back yard.

So you're against racial and economic injustice, but also you'd like the power structures that led to said injustice to remain the same? :chris:

I think most of you guys are jumping to unfounded conclusions regarding my comment. The wording used by MLK could be quite appropriate in the context of his time as a revolutionary figure but AOC is using that quote to denote her modern day political position in 21st century America. Nothing about radical redistribution of power and economic power connotes good public policy nor the American tradition of democracy and liberalism. In fact it sounds more like the typical words used by strong man populist dictators or wannabe dictators of the past.. I object to the language first and foremost.

Secondly if she had said that America needs to address its inequality problems through smarter social public policy such as a better health care system or America should stop being assholes to its minorities then I would had no qualm about it at all. I lived in France for years during my grad studies. I enjoyed the "socialism" in France and it wasn't scary at all. But France also has very smart people working in their government who looks at good public policy as a matter of science rather than politics.. I have never heard of a mainstream French politician describing their democratic socialism using political rhetoric as strong as "radical redistribution of political and economic power.."

So you decided to double down on being a racist republican tool by trying to make excuses for threatening to vote for trump because you cannot stand equality or fairness.

May I suggest the daily stormer or stormfront where you will find many people who are just like you. To threaten black people with voting for trump on MLK day in a thread for him, and then to try and excuse your racism and threats with the lame ass republicon excuses is just obvious racism. Quit while you are a behind. Just be the racist prick you are and stop pretending.

    Obvious racist is obvious.

I've just had a glance through every post you have made in the past two years that contains the word peaceful and while @Fisherman's Worf appears on a couple of those pages I can't find any where he says anything like that in response?

Even if what you say about Fisherman's Worf is true (which remains to be seen; we are all waiting for you to produce the link), "leftforge told us" and "I seem to remember one poster saying something along those lines" are so radically different from each other that I can only assume that the first one was a deliberate distortion of the facts in order to "make a point".

    IOW: a strawman argument.

I guess I can understand that but you have to understand that the modern Democrat Party is a bit more moderate than this quote would lead you to believe. AOC herself said that if we were in any other nation, there's no way that her and Joe Biden would be in the same political party. While I do have a favorable opinion towards her, I don't think a radical redistribution of wealth is an attainable or worthwhile goal.

Not that we should indulge this piece of whaataboutism BS, but got links to examples where other people attributed statements to you that they can't back up?

And of course, two wrongs don't make a right. Even assuming for argument's sake that people wrongly attributed to you things that you didn't say, that doesn't justify you doing the same thing to others.

BTW, don't you have some explaining of what you meant to do in the Declaration of Independence 2.0 thread?
