Cadets are supposed to be in the 18-22 age bracket, if you go by the available material...he's an apparent 28 year old babyface...not uncommon, over there.

I think Kirk and Spock were about 21 or 22 when they finished with school. So this guy being about 28 or 29 makes since.

What doesn't make since is a 35 year old Matt Damon playing a Kirk in his early 20's.

I think it's POSSIBLE to account for all these folks being at the same time and place since it's not uncommon for particularly gifted students to serve as graduate teaching assistants. And it's not unusual for a cadet to do a tour on a ship of the line.

If they maintain a certain balance between what we think we know of those days and the understandable necessity to "tweak" a few things, I'm fine with it - so long as it's a Hornblower type story and not a "Dawson's Planet" bit of rubbish.

figure that maybe spock is a graduate teaching assistant, Kirk is a senior, Scottty is an ensign assigned to the ship that Kirk does a tour on (one assumes that's where the drama comes in - something on board a ship) and that there is a prominent part for GARY MITCHELL in the story as well.
McCoy can be the guy who has a successful civilian practice for now...wasn't the old story that losing his family drove him to join the Fleet? Maybe is you wan't a bit of soap opera you throw that in as the B story. But he wouldn't be in the Fleet yet.

The minor players can get lost...maybe you see a young Russian teen as part of a tour group or a freshman enrollment that just happens in a passing scene. But this story really doesn't NEED Uhura, Sulu, and Checkov.

Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Mitchell, and Scotty (just because his greater age makes it more realistic) is all the main players you need. the fanboy in me says I hope we see a Finnigan too (how about the Irishman from Braveheart who bragged of Ireland as "my Island"?) but I can't argue he's necessary.

Also, please GOD if we MUST see Kirk as the Great White Lover, let's bring back some of the girls that have already been named. How many "love of your life" girls can any one man have? Let it be Carol or Ruth or the gal he netioned who was unseen in Generations (even though we have no mention yet that he knew her in the acadamy days)...hell even the crazy woman from Turnabout Intruder is better than yetanother once-in-a-lifetime-lover that he leaves behind.

This fella is a truly gifted actor. I love his work. However, even with all the makeup and good will in the world I can't see how he can be made to look like Scotty.

Well, to play Devil's Advocate, if this is a new production (ie reboot), he doesn't have to look like Scotty.

From now on Scotty would look like him.
