A TORNADO? YOU THINK? Okay, examine this picture closely. What could have destroyed these homes? Tsunami? No, too far from the coast. Hurricane? Not hurricane season. Excessive snowfall? Too warm. I'm scratching my head and pondering this riddle. According to this article it's a POSSIBLE tornado. I guess they were burned before, and don't want to say for sure until all the facts are in. Line of tornados sweeping across the South? Check! Houses leveled? Check! Residents walk around through the debris of their neighborhood after a possible tornado ripped through the Trussville, Ala. area in the early hours. Jefferson County sheriff's spokesman Randy Christian said the storm produced a possible tornado that moved across northern Jefferson County around 3:30 a.m., causing damage in Oak Grove, Graysville, Fultondale, Center Point, Clay and Trussville. That's up there with the severed head discovered in a park being investigated as a "possible" murder.
"This newsroom will not engage in sterotyping these kinds of events. It's unfair to the tornado community that they are scapegoated for every mobile home that winds up scattered over the countryside or every big rig hurled a mile from the interstate. Until we have ruled out other causes--malevolent, telekinetic aliens, for instance--we will not rush to judgment."
You'd think the National Weather Service would know one way or another if they'd had a tornado there. We get strong straight-line winds here from time to time that are sometimes mistaken for tornadoes, but the NWS always verifies it one way or another.
