I don't see how it's dishonest as long as we make sure there's a record. I do see how it would be cowardly, though, especially if the primary reason is people keep slamming you with the same name, and so you keep changing it to keep ahead of the reputation. On TBBS, I must have changed my name 5 times over the 21 years I've been there. In my case, I tend to get tired of just one name because I have many names, but I would imagine that's a different use case than what you're talking about here.

As for allowing it, I've just gone along with it because it never seemed like such a big deal. If it does seem like it's too ripe for abuse, though, that's something that can be discussed. If it's allowing people to get away with getting out from under their reputation, that's something that can be discussed, too. So, yeah, if you think it goes too far, we can all talk about it and maybe do something if we generally agree.

My friends there tell me that Ben Shapiro, PragerU, Jordan Peterson, Tim Pool, Vaush, they've all been amplified to the nth degree, and when you push back against them, you end up getting suspended, whereas their followers can straight up threaten you with death and be left alone. As for name changes, I can't relate to constantly wanting to change them. I've used mine on various message boards for over 25 years (the lower case/upper case thing is because someone at a now-defunct media board already registered "shooter" but the software allowed me to register by using -ER at the end).

To me, unless the change is made in an effort to be funny or something, it makes the user seem insecure.

He's a rather dangerous cult of personality, and draws in a lot of people, especially young people unfortunately, and so of course Elon sees him as a man who speaks the truth, because Elon's never met a dangerous reactionary he didn't like.
