    Is she disabled?

Does she have a medical condition?

    No?

Then why the fuck is her life subsidized?

If I don't work, I don't expect to eat (or have a car, or a house, etc).

I'll never understand the mindset of people like that bitch.

Well, I read the article. It is true that low income families are having a tough time coping with rising costs, but that's to be expected. Doesn't make it right or good, but it is here and we're having to deal with it. That being said, these ladies here have no right to complain. They don't work, their home is subsidized. Within walking distance, I am certain there is a job one can get, even a supermarket job. I used to work at a local Marsh here in Middletown as a bag boy or service clerk or whatever they're called now, when we had it very bad, and every meager cent I made went right into the family coffers. We scraped by, and I mean scraped, and that wasn't the worst. We've been homeless before.

Now, we're doing well. Why? Because my family worked hard, fought tooth and nail for everything we have, and we've slowly begun to stabilize. Even now, when gas prices are abominable, we're doing okay. Not great, but we know that we have water, power and a roof over our heads, and that we can get food to eat every night. Believe me, I understand the feeling of not eating for a couple of days and your dad is able to buy a loaf of bread and a pack of lunch meat from the "Discontinued/Clearance" rack. I know the feeling of being covered up in a blanket, in the dead of winter, in the back of a Chevy Citation at the age of eight, while my mom and dad are freezing in the front seat huddling together to keep warm. No home, no place for my dad to work (no one would hire him without a home), and family wouldn't help.

Been there, done that, don't want to do it again, don't want to see anyone go through it. Over time we've become smarter with our money, and it's getting better. We still help as many people as we can without getting ourselves into financial trouble, but people have to be willing to step up also. My family and I were lucky, I had good friends who were willing to help us out, and to this day I thank them from the bottom of my heart.

But this? This? These ladies aren't doing anything. They're not working, they're not looking for ways to bring in income, they're just complaining, and spending, and consuming. In my heart I have compassion and hope they can rise from the position they're in, but I cannot have sympathy and pity for them because they do nothing to remove themselves from it. Yes, gas prices are high, yes, groceries are more expensive, we all feel that pain every day we get gas, or buy food. Ladies, with all due respect, you have to dig yourselves out of this one. You're already getting more help than my family did, and we did it. You can too.

Apparently the daughter managed to graduate high school and hold jobs in the past. Mom is apparently disabled from a car accident 17 years ago but the fact that she never received a diploma or held a job between the age of 16 and 23 is rather suggestive.

Well, to me, unemployment and food stamps are for very short durations. For example, if I lose my job in a layoff and need to feed my family for the next month or so, maybe two or even three months. It's not for as long as some of these people are using it, and there are people living years at a time off of welfare.

As for you, EP, just keep hanging in there. :)

The daughter definitely needs to get a job somewhere, anywhere. Any income is going to help, believe me. Anyone in that family above the age of 14 needs to have a job (except for the disabled who cannot work, of course). You can't just rest on the government handout and hope that something better comes along. That's a fairy tale, and if it happens in real life, it's rare. You have to work to get out of that situation, and you have to work hard. Simply complaining does nothing.

I'm sure there are a lot of jobs that they cannot do.

For example, a waitress. Good money, if you're capable, friendly, and attentive. But very hard to do if you are obese like that. Hard to move around, and generally a turn off to most people.

You know who hires a lot of people? Telemarketing services. Around here, there could be a 50% unemployment rate and there are always telemarketing jobs available. You can sit down, and you work by the phone all day. Yes, it's a bit noisy, and yes it can be a hassle, but it's a job and most of them pay decent by that standard, anywhere from $7 to $11 an hour.

Yep, and around here there is a huge demand for workers at Walmart, and other 'smaller' stores that are losing people to the big money rigs.

When I was in high school, there was a pretty good unemployment rate in my town. But I found a job, part-time, doing something that more other people hate. And I worked at it for 2 years. Now, the work I have put into that job for two years, has given me such a good job at the same company, that I'm honestly thinking about not going to university.

    Exactly.

What those two eat in one meal, I eat in 2 days. No wonder they're complaining.

    Uh... no.

    University = Good.

Why not work with your employer and see if you could go to school and come back to work summers. Or maybe do one semester a year real time, and do online courses the rest of the year.

I have talked to him about letting me keep my position so I can still work summers, and I haven't heard anything back yet.

    I would like that.

Great post Azure, well except for the fact that you are considering not going to university. I mean, I can understand where you are coming from, but think about it some more. Going to university is such a beautiful experience of its own, and it allows you to build upon your current success to take you even further.

I remember back in the day I had all kinds of jobs to make the rent. Working in a junk yard. Working the Friday and Saturday night graveyard shift at Baby Girl's Bubbles Laundromat in NYC doing other people's laundry -- man did it suck when the washers would break in the middle of a wash and you'd have to stick your hand into the dirty water to move the wet clothes into a different machine. But, if there is a will, then you have to find a way.

As for the people in the OP, all I can say it's hard times all around. We all have to find a way to make the best of it -- and while I'm not sure what that is, I remain optimistic that we will all find some way to get through it.

    So this got me thinking.

Since I still officially live in Atmore. Pay AL taxes, got the DL, and all that shit, does this mean that when the next hurricane hits, I still get my EBT card?

Not that I want to defend those two on the issue of groceries...but that line is mega-fucking simplistic.

    You don't move for free.

Beyond the cost of just getting you and yours to a new place, the start-up cost in setting up housekeeping ANYWHERE means it's not at all hard to be too broke to move.
