I'm picking up this game on Friday. This game looks amazing and I can't wait to dive into this for hours on end.
Oh, look. Screechy people are saying you're a bad person for buying this. Now I kind of want a copy. Maybe it was all a marketing ploy.
maybe.. although why you clowns are willing to part with $70 thinking it somehow gets one over on anyone but yourselves is beyond me. from wikipedia because I've already spent more time on this that could've been spent drinking a glass of water: the 5 seconds of play that I saw makes me think it's little more than GTA 3 with a facelift. this part kinda makes sense: The criticism spurred from the beliefs that the game's core message was that the minority goblin group should be considered the enemy for rebelling against their oppressor and fighting for freedom and equal rights.[52][53] we know you guys HATE that.
It's nothing to do with that. The screechy people are mad at JK Rowling for refusing to deny objective reality.
so the other concerns have nothing to do with it? just your pretense to "objective" and/or "reality"? well, have fun smiting semitic caricatures, I guess.
No, it's nothing to do with goblins, and everything to do with the controversial position that biology is real.
If we started boycotting entertainment because a lot of the creators are horrible people, well... ...there'd be no entertainment left.

My partner is a massive HP fan. For her birthday late last month, I did up a Hogwarts Acceptance letter - did the ol' dip the paper in tea schtick to give it the old world vibe. Even did a wax seal on the envelope. I'd assumed she would figure I had pre-ordered the game for her. Instead - bless her - she was too excited by the acceptance letter and started roleplaying saying "I'll be able to come home for the holidays!", with no mention of the game. I gave her a funny look and told her to read it again. The letter said to be at Hogwarts on Feb 10th (today - the release of the game). Still, the penny didn't drop. Finally, after 10 seconds of looking back and forth between me and the letter, her eyes lit up and she yelled "DID YOU BUY THE GAME!?" She's blonde. Anyway, game pre-loading now. Woop woop. re: Rowling - I read the essay on her website to try and get a handle on what all the fuss is about. I read nothing that I would qualify as bigoted or transphobic. She raises some fair points that are understandably thorny for those in the trans community, but that's why we have discussion / debate - or at least used to before the mob decided the more appropriate course of action was to reflexively cancel everyone whose opinions clashed with their own. I wouldn't mind guessing most of the folk on the Rowling hate-wagon haven't read anything she's actually written on the subject or in the appropriate context. She's been marked for cancellation / recrimination and that's that. We are overdue for a fucking mean reversion.
yes, it is... and it's realer than some folks are capable of comprehending. anyways, mods wanna move this honeypot thread to where it belongs?
So are the goblins in the game as Jew-ish (stereotyped) as I have seen them represented in the movies? I have not read the books so I do not know if they were as tropy there. I hope the game makers made the goblins a little more classic rather than cringy. I have a hard time judging because I am actually pro-goblin. One thing I loved about EQ was that with a lot of effort I could become the high elven hero of the goblins. This does not sound like it has that much freedom built into the gameplay.
People really need to stop it with this whole "let's find things to be offended about." Because no sounding horn has ever been used in any other culture. No, sir. This is going to be the most over-analyzed video game in recent memory. I think J.K. Rowling is an idiot, but people really need to divert their energies to something that actually matters. Like going after the politicians who are passing bigoted laws. Because clearly, the hordes of people visiting Universal Studio's Wizarding World, or the Warner Bros. Studios Harry Potter sets, or paying big money to watch Harry Potter and the Cursed Child don't seem to be impacted by all the screaming on social media.
1612 seems a bit conveniently coincidental... The Fettmilch Rising[edit] Tensions between the patricians and the guilds led to the Fettmilch Rising between 1612 and 1614,[5] named after its ringleader, Vincenz Fettmilch. During the riot, the Judengasse was attacked and looted, and the Jews were expelled from the city. Two Jews and one assailant were killed in the pogrom.[6] The tension was caused by the demand of the guilds for greater participation in urban and fiscal policies. The guilds wanted a reduction in grain prices, as well as some anti-Jewish regulations, such as a limitation in the number of Jews and a 50% reduction in the interest rate that Jewish moneylenders could charge. Beside the guilds, merchants and independent craftsmen supported Fettmilch in the hope of annulling their debts by restricting the number of moneylenders.
While the horn thing doesn't really feel like a coincidence, the more I think about it the more the controversy over the game feels manufactured to promote it. I'm not saying that some of the people telling you to not buy it aren't sincere, but let's be realistic. Like you said, the Harry Potter franchise is big business and has been at least since the movies started coming out. There's always been at least one shelf of Harry Potter merch at Hot Topic since my city first got a Hot Topic, and no one's loudly protesting that. Bookstores too, they almost always have assort HP crap. And Lego, so many Legos. And Lego video games! And those prequel movies! And the trans rights backlash hasn't been nearly anything close to what we're seeing now. TLDR: Everyone's getting played. I should have realized as soon as I saw people saying "you can't just pirate the game and play it for free to stick it to Joanne either, because reasons"
good point... when I looked at it on Steam I noticed there's already an expansion pack, bringing it to $90. If I had any interest in harry potter, I'd do what I did with fallen order and wait till it's 80% off for the gotye next year. the manufactured outrage spiced with a bit of jewbaiting and JKR's established enfant terrible rep is clearly proven here to get people who'd normally be more frugal to pay full price.
le Guin was just bitter because although she got all the awards and accolades, Rowling got all the attention and, more importantly, the $$$$$.
Also, anyone who thinks Harry Potter is high-brow literature needs to give their head a shake. I'm not defending Rowling, but le Guin can fuck off with her snotty, arrogant rebuke of another author. It smacks of pettiness and self-importance, and she should have been better than that. She's dead in any event... so not sure if she'd be able to see my post from down there anyway.
No hatred for trans people, not even a bit of anti-Semitism.... You can even play a tranny! What a disappointment. I traded the game back in. It's no fun that way. What a shame!
I don't really care one way or the other... well, except to poke fun at tweedle dum and dummer spending their minimum wage for a new release... give it six months and get it for 80% off FFS.
There are SciFi and Fantasy IPs with races based on (negative) stereotypes so it's just a bit silly at this point... I mean:
I bought it, because: 1: I wanted a new game 2: Starfield isn't out yet 3: Baldur's Gate 3 isn't fully out yet 4: If I voted with my wallet every time someone involved says something I disagree with/is bigoted, I wouldn't be able to buy anything I'm liking it so far. I have to play in low-quality mode because my video card isn't the best (RX 570), but low-quality actually isn't that bad.
Yeah, and many other places. There's a bunch of little towns too that have like one vendor and maybe some side quests. It's not really a matter of "Can you explore [various places]?" It's more "You have to explore [various places] if you want experience points." A good number of the side quests are pretty much "explore shit and look for stuff."
