I've never been a big fan of sports, so I never learned how to properly catch or throw a football. I can throw a baseball pretty good though and hit a target two thirds of a time. So what happened was today I was visiting my friend and his kid asked me if I would teach him how to throw a football. His father is usally fairly busy with his store and does spend much of his time there, but he does spend time with his kids on the weekends. However, he too just doesn't like football, but his kid is a big fan. I hated to break it to the boy, and I told him I didn't know how to throw a football but if I did know I would teach him to. He was somewhat disappointed and I can't blame the kid. So how would you teach the kid to throw a football?
Show him the proper grip . . . tips of your fingers on the laces, your hand as far back on the end of the ball as you can comfortably go. It's a bit different from throwing a baseball. You want to think of it almost like throwing a javelin. The hand holding the ball should be at or just below shoulder level to start. Free hand is held out in front of you. You throw with your shoulder, not your elbow. The ball should roll off your fingertips at release, imparting the all-important spiral. It takes some practice to properly chuck the pigskin.

Throwing a football is one of those things that's easy to teach in person but tough to learn by reading.
