This does not seem to be the use of facebook itself which is a relief. It seems that facebook offered up a VPN that would have stepped in before encryption was applied to internet packets and sent the info on other apps back to facebook. This would be something you would want to worry about with any VPN out there as Data sales are so profitable, and the encryption on packets over the internet is applied at a level close to the network and not in the higher levcels of the OS where the VPN programs would be able to get to it while running on your machine. In other words, make sure it is a third party VPN and one from a company that is not involved in data sales like facebook is. Recognize any VPN software is runjning on your computer in unencrypted spaces. I would not trust6 any VPN that was made by FB, Twitter, Walmart, the government, or anyone that wasn't transparent about who they get funding from. Even free VPNs are going to try and stay in existence through some form of funding and are open to the temptation of data sales. Pay for your VPN, and watch who you are paying for the service.
