Evercrack that is. So I was tryingn to find a not WOW mmorpg to play and I was browsing steam and saw free EQ, and I was like lets see how bad it was.

3 days later and I have a level 30 enchanter again with 3 tradeskills over fifty and 500 plat in the bank. They made the leveling so much easier.

not unless Tererun is a plumber or an appliance repairman. I think it's a job prerequisite to be honest. That said this guy can keep those pliers - I really don't need them back.

    So, an update.

I am loving it. Years ago I fell in love with everquest. It was not always a pretty thing as EQ was 10 billion times more difficult than wussy ass WOW. But some of us liked the way they made certain things hard. You still have trouble seeing at night. If you are human, the night is a small bubble of light from your lantern. If this does not scare you, it soon will because death still means something in EQ. Gone are the days when you had to go find your corpse so you could get all your items back. Now you can respawn with them, but you still lose XP and can lose your level from it.

EQ used to be hard as fuck. It took me a few dedicated years to make 40. When it took over 15 minutes to meditate back a full bar of mana it make the game a huge time sink. Then there were the spawns that you needed for certain quests. You knew how to hunt the elusive creatures of the world because you had to learn how to do it.

But the game has become much more pleasant without losing it's go0d parts. The downtime for medding is not insane anymore. You can actually solo yellows into your forties. Yellows are tough battles of createres close to but above your level. The only people who could do it back in the day were druids and necros because they were cheesy. Now you can do it with your class. You can also handle an add or three if you know how to handle your class. It used to be that if you got a second creature mad at you it was going to take everything you had. Now you can handle a few extra creatures without dying. This new way makes the game much less frustrating, and gives you a chance. It is still hard as fuck to handle multiple creatures, but you do not have to run anymore.

There are no more crowded spawns which caused huge problems. There are people around, but now you can offer up some buffs without worrying about that person stealing your spwan because there are enough to go around. I have made 42 in a week and a half. I have had no problem sharing a good area with the others, even with obvious power levelers out there.

The mercenary system is a great idea. You can chose an AI mercenary that will act as a tank, melee dps, spell dps, or healer from what I can see. You have to pay to rent them every fifteen minutes, but the charge is minescule compared to the value of junk loot you earn. It is a little drain but you can dismiss them while you are puttering around town doing tradeskills or traveling.

I used to love the vastness of eq lands, and they still are. I have not yet gone to get a mount because I actually always loved travel in the game because of how it feels. That is still there. The tradeskill system has been tweaked to be a lot less clicky but still something to actually master. it is far more intricate than WOW, and you can fail and lose everything you combined which gives it that monumental acheivement when you actually build up skills. It is also nice you can do all the trade skills on every character, but you have to chose specialization for high end stuff.

So far I have been enjoying all the nostalgia and so far it is all free. I think their idea for charging for the latest content, more than 2 character slots, and decorations is a great way to go.

I've been playing FF14 and dabbling with ESO since WoW's become World of Grindy Systemscraft.
Level 50+30ish CP Dragonknight in ESO, and four level 50+ working through the end of Realm Reborn in FF.

I used to play DDO and Star Trek Online, but I got tired of reinstalling on every computer and then having to wait a few minutes for the game to load every time I wanted to spend ten minutes doing stuff. These MMOs just take too much time for me. :(

A little update. I am still really loving it.

I hit level 50 on two characters and the world just blossomed from there. I really do love the enchanter class that they made. The spellbook is what you would imagine a magic user's spellbook to be. No other class has a spellbook this rich in lore and abilities. And these things are useful to other people.

Now I also have the ranger. EQ had 2 solo classes which has difficulty finding a place in groups. They were druids and necros. Those two classes could solo like no one else. The ranger ended up being a almost tank with druid abilities. The thing that was different than WoW was their paper tanks could actually take over tanking because they did not go coocoo with the HP and damage. Yes, the plate class could mitigate more damage, but if that tank fell, or if you got another high class add the ranger could take it. The ranger class is pretty good for soloing now that they have mercs.

I found out the healing mercs get res too. That is important to get your XP back because of the hit you take when you die.

Then the other night I did something I had never done before because I never did drugs back when I played EQ. I got all trippy, got into the enchanter, put on air elemental illusion which lets me levitatate, climb, and jump off things easy, and also prevents mob agro, and I went sky sailing all over the zones. It is different than WoW mounts because you have to find spires to climb so you can glide slowly down. From those heights the zones look really spacy. I also had some electronic Hearts of space theme music going on. I felt like I was flying in a fantasy. I woke up and had a bunch of scythes in my packs and I remembered visions of storming the tower entry to the plane of hate in the desert of ro and killing all the specters there.

The other night I helped a yound ranger starting off (maybe he was conning me for some buffs but I don't care) and it felt great. If he was conning me he acted like he did not know the obvious things.

The Bazaar is still there, and people are still selling stuff. I have mounts to earn up for, and alternate advancement to modify my characters in some awesome ways leveling doesn't.

It is basically free so far. Yes, i had to buy 3 more character slots because two just wasn't enough. I might eventually buy some more. but aside from that I cannot even see where I would want to spend money.

I don't spend just ten minutes doing stuff when I play. So I could see how that would be annoying if you wanted to do other things.
