So today, out of the blue, I got an e-mail from XYZ Corporation. They wanted me to update my profile on their HR database; made it sound like they were getting ready to do some hiring. That said, given my past experiences with XYZ, I was a bit...reticent. :garamet:

See, the first year of my MBA, XYZ was looking for interns. So I went ahead and applied. Never heard anything. I'd applied through the school, so I talked to the career counselor. "They withdrew the programs due to budget cuts" was her reply. :garamet:

About 8 months later I got an e-mail from them--again unsolicited--asking me to send them a resume. I ignored it. No way was I going to work for a firm that jerks people around, makes them jump through hoops, and then doesn't even have the decency to keep them informed. Then I got another e-mail. Then another. They really, really wanted me. :PGT: Well, what the Hell. It never hurt anyone to listen. And it really looked like I was in a strong position. So I sent them my resume. I almost immediately got an e-mail reply! "Thank you for your interest in XYZ Corporation. Your resume has been added to our database. If we have any openings that match your qualifications, someone will contact you."

A few months after that, I heard rumblings that all was not well at XYZ. About that time a friend had a job offer in hand from them. After not hearing from them for weeks, he was told the offer had been withdrawn. :garamet:

At this point I found myself thinking "it'll be a cold day in Hell before I'll ever work for these jokers." Then the icing on the cake was, at the height of my job search, XYZ dumped over a thousand of their employees out onto the job market, laying off people in exactly the area I was looking for work in. :ualbert: :bang:

So you can imagine my feelings I got an e-mail from XYZ today, asking me to update my information in their HR database. :ualbert: :ualbert: :ualbert:

And now I've gotta decide if I'm going to do it or not. :garamet:

OK. So the synopsis of the above rant is:

Say you have had a bad experience with a firm. Is there ever a time when you need to forgive and forget? If a huge company that employs a lot of people has burned you more than a few times, but suddenly is interested in you, do you humor them? Or do you say "Fooled me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on ME." and ignore them?

Can you afford to be picky or not?

If it meant the world would explode, and kill everyone, and everything, I wouldn't go crawling back to Wal-Mart.

I don't even care if that comes across as psychosis.

    I'm just that stubborn.

Well there's the dilemma. In a couple weeks I won't be able to afford a sammich, let alone to be picky.

And XYZ Corporation certainly has thousands and thousands of people who want to work for them. So my "boycott" of them doesn't hurt them at all. But it could prevent me from getting a cool, good-paying job.

Conversely, if I DO deal with them, the worst that could happen is that they could waste 15 minutes of my time, tell me that I'm not Good Enough, and reinforce my belief that they are just a cocktease.

Shit. I guess I need to send them a resume. :garamet:

Send it to them, IMO. You can always find a different job and fuck them over later. :)

You might as well. It's always better to apply for a job and be told no then not apply. Besides, there might have been massive turnover in their HR department and you might stand a better chance with a new regime.

    Intel, or HP?

Either way, yeah--go ahead and submit resume revisions. And simply don't expect jack shit from them. That way at worst they meet your expectations, and at best you're pleasantly surprised.

You should always act with enlightened self-interest. Don't allow your hurt feelings to get involved. If it is rationally worthwhile for you to consider working with them again, then you should do so. Otherwise, do not.

In short, don't cut your nose off to spite your face.

    Yup, anyjob > no job

The trick is getting a job you enjoy or some people even love, which also keeps you interested! :techman:

Go with what Gordon Gekko said: Leave emotions out of it when it's about the money. :shades:

Anyway - you calling them "XYZ Corporation" is kinda funny considering how you've been running around in your BR thread talking about Intel doing the exact same thing "XYZ Corporation" apparently did. (laying off people who do the same thing you do)
