Hell yeah the North would have used them. Most people don't grasp how close the North was to losing the war at a couple different times.

People focus too much on Virginia and the eastern theatre which makes the war look much closer than it was.

The Confederacy was losing the war from day one in the western threatre and that is where the war was ultimately won.
