I bought one yesterday, along with Final Fantasy XIII.

What should I know? Any especially good games I should check out? Terrible crap to avoid?

What sort of games do you like?

You should at least rent Valkaria Chronicles. Probably the best RPG or game I've played from this gen, so far. Folklore is also nice if you like the Tim Burton-ish creepy crawly creatures.

Anything that doesn't give me motion sickness.
    I'll check those out. Thanks!

The Codemasters racers, DiRT & GRiD, are fun racing games.

I've been instructed to ask if there are any ps3 racing games "like MarioKart, with powerups and stuff."

The best I can think of right now off the top of my head is either Wipeout HD (features weapons you pick up) or Motorstorm Pacific Rift.

I personally don't think you can go wrong by picking up a copy of Motorstorm: Pacific Rift (make sure you get that one, the original Motorstorm doesn't have splitscreen). It's one of the best looking PS3 exclusives and it is a massive amount of fun to play. Doesn't have pick ups but it is quite arcadey and lots of fun. Plus you can knock people off the track into lava flows, what's not to love about that.

If you don't mind waiting a couple of months you could pick up a copy of Blur, which is actually Activisions attempt to create a multiplatform game with similar appeal to Mario Kart and is getting a lot of Buzz.

For games to pickup/avoid, are you just talking PS3 exclusives, or is this your first step into this generation of games altogether?

For fun and quirky gameplay, you should also at least try out Loco Roco on the PS Network. You can download a demo and try it out. I was sold after the first level.

I don't know. I know stuff like PSHome rewards like shirts, pants, furniture, etc you keep because that stuff isn't on your harddrive, it's on the sony servers and is tied to your username.

I don't know about movies and games. It seems to me that Sony would allow you to re-download games and game content. But I don't know about movies and tv episodes.

EDIT- Oh, and your psn account is safe. Although what "settings" do you mean?

There is a download history on the PS3, so after you replaced the drive, just acces the Account Managent and go to the transaction(?) option where you can add money to your wallet etc.
There should be a menu option called something like downloadlist (it's in Dutch for me:/)
And it should contain all the stuff you downloaded...

I just swapped out my 80 GB HDD for a new 320 GB HDD. Easy as pie!! I was able to dL my entire old drive to a750 GB HDD external hard drive (I use primarily on my desktop) using the "Backup Utility" found under the settings icon on the XMB. After that, I swapped out the drive using instructions found here. For some reason, I was prompted to update the system OS and the PS3 installed the OS to the new HDD. After thhat, I put the backup on the new drive and all of my software was there and ready to go.

all sorted now. My ps3 has a 320gb drive in it even managed to get my old data back onto it with out a hitch. It may be me but the unit seems quieter still got a surprise when I looked at the old drive to find out the 60gb I thought it was turns out to be a 40gb.
