No, you didn't. You brought the topic into this thread. Fair enough. Still not the entire State of Maryland, much less some nationwide threat, which is what the OP is trying to conjure.
A little insight into Maryland politics. Despite the fact that you think I didn't live there, I did. Baltimore city and Baltimore county andAnnapolis swallows up most votes from the eastern shore, so anything that happens on the eastern shore is probably influenced by those two cities/counties. So no, not the entire state of Maryland, but I wouldn't put it past the state government to be involved in some way. Like I said, local school districts have little to no say inhow their schools are run.
Well, if you ever come up with some actual proof to support your opinion, I hope you'll post it here.
Despite Zombie insisting I'm a moron, I have great respect for his opinion. In fact, we agree politicly more than we disagree. Despite how he thinks of me and despite his negative comments towards me, I'm guessing that maybe he has less respect for you than me and probably agrees that you and gul are partisan hacks. Again, I can't speak for him, I'm just going off of my gut feeling. That being said, I'm going to take his advice and stop responding to you because it leads to nowhereville.
That means you know for a fact that the state was involved in this situation? Fine. Present your data.
Maybe I'll just pull a Krieg and not back up my statement and you'll be called a moron because you requested proof?
Actually it does, because if this was about his qualifications as a teacher, this wouldn't require involuntary confinement and medical evaluation. A more reasoned response might be to require him to see a shrink as a condition of continued enrollment, and frankly given what it's over, even that would be an overreaction, let alone what actually went down, with the drug sweeps and all.
1971 - 1997 and you're full of shit. Typical Eastern Shore asshole complaining that they're not the tail that wags the dog.
Given the lack of concern you show for the Second, I think folks can be forgiven for assuming you'd feel the same way about the First.
The teacher is, the students are. Since the 1970s (60s?) with the advent of psychotropic drugs the laws changed requiring court orders to commit people to psychiatric hospitals. For a judge to sign an order there has to be compelling evidence that the person in question is an immediate danger to himself or others. The evidence must be provided by a medical professional, not Billy Joe from the Sheriff's office. Failing this, the other way to be committed is voluntarily. No psych hospital is going to violate this. Either the young gentleman in question committed himself or there was compelling evidence he was an immediate danger. No hospital is going to violate patient/doctor confidentiality to issue a statement concerning the grounds for committal. There is more to this story than we've read.
And that is what this thread is about. Given the danger guns present, reasonable restrictions on their purchase and use are not a violation of the 2nd.
Bullshit. The teacher has been suspended, searched, and possibly forced to undergo spurious exams ("When did you first feel this perverse need to write?"). The pupils aren't being protected against any reasonable danger, but learn to look for danger in the wrong places, to distrust fiction and their teachers, and not to expect either freedoms or competence in dealing with literature.
I'm the last to hold US medical practices up as an ideal, but protection of privacy and personal freedom is carefully exercised, often to the detriment of patient outcomes. If this teacher has been committed to a medical facility (this is what the article implies: "taken in for an emergency medical evaluation") it's not unwarranted. Short of a court order based on professional testimony, the only way this could happen is if he attempted suicide. If he's being held in a jail, other laws apply. As for students looking for danger in the wrong places, perhaps. But it may encourage students to practice discretion with what they publish whether it's on Amazon or Facebook. It could be used against you.
So you're saying you're so sure that the vioaltions reported in the OP article couldn't happen, that the information given in the article must be wrong . Ok, that might be. Just as long as we're clear that if the original story were true, that would be an outrage. This in known as a chilling effect, it follows and reinforces the power of censrship, and it's aboslutely horrid. But you just said you were sure it would never be used against you in this way in the US, didn't you?
Correct. Perhaps there's a ambulance chaser in the house that can confirm? I don't think so, did I? It's common practice here to use statements you've made online while vetting you for hiring. And that's just one case. I believe the same is true in Europe or google wouldn't have so many requests to remove individual's data from their searches.
Ah. I took your previous post to mean that all of this could only have happened to the teacher if he was certifiably pathological. That he could be out of a job because his school doesn't understand the concept of fiction is something we can't outlaw, at least for privately owned schools, and I guess kids do need to know that. But teaching them submission to that chilling effect is a horrible lesson for kids, and pretty much the opposite of keeping them safe.
Certifiably pathological behavior other than his writing. Most notably posing an immediate physical danger to himself or others. I think there is another story here and his novel is just window dressing.
Say it a third time. Make sure to click your heels when you do. Another victim of Volponosis. Sad, really. Yeah, take a tip from Captain Anime here. Make a completely off-topic statement, then wait for the applause. When you’re challenged instead, make pretty speeches that aren’t even about the topic you derailed the thread with. Eventually your cohort will see you floundering again and tell you to “stop responding,” even though you initiated the sidebar. Then post anime. Preferably the same gif over and over and over again. Everyone will appreciate your great intellect.
