Not necessarily. If the audience is mainly people who are nostalgic about Frank Sinatra and want someone who sounds like him, who's to say Frank Jr. isn't the one who best fulfills that desire, talent notwithstanding?

There is room for more than one singer in the world. If you can sing better than Frank Jr., go find an opportunity somewhere else.

Also, you lament that someone else with greater talent doesn't get a shot, but that's true for almost every case. For every person that gets an opportunity, it's likely that there is someone, somewhere who has better talent who doesn't. But there's often more to success than talent.

The singer who moves to a big city and plays in dive bars and nightclubs for years may have less talent than one who stayed in their small hometown, but the former is the one who's likely to catch the big opportunities.

Methinks Paladin is using the smaller of his two heads in that judgment call.

What else did she do? I think her "Like A Prayer" days were her peak of hotness.

A couple questions: Do you wear jeans? If so, do you have a specific preferred brand? Levi's 501s? Wranglers? Diesel? J.C. Penny Rustlers? Or just whatever is on sale at Wal*Mart? If you don't have a preference and just buy whatever is cheapest, I withdraw my line of questioning and concede your point. But if you do prefer a specific brand, why? The store brand at Wal*Mart is technically about as good as any other brand, isn't it? Why pay more for the same blue denim?

Years ago I made paintings. I thought I had some aptitude for it but moved on to other things because, the art world being as unfair as it is, I wasn't ever going to get rich--or even make a living--doing it. I've still got a couple of my things on the walls in my house, but the bulk of them are in the closet of my childhood bedroom on my parents' farm. After my had parents died I had to clean out my bedroom and decide what I wanted to keep and what I wanted to get rid of. I was shocked by how bad my old paintings were. None of them were even worth carting to Oregon to stick in my garage. In fact I was kind of tempted to destroy them, I was so embarrassed by them.

Try not to be offended by this, but you're probably not sophisticated enough to know what a million dollar vase looks like. Don't feel bad. I have an art degree and I'm probably not either. You are probably sophisticated enough to see how much nicer Franz Marc's "Blue Horses" are to the $49.95 sofa sized landscape you can pick up this Saturday at the Holiday Inn convention hall.

[edit: Oh, I remember the other point I was going to make. There is a friend of the family. He's a piano player. Insanely talented--at least technically. He's actually managed to scrape out a living playing keyboards. But he isn't Billy Joel. He even moved to L.A. at some point because that was what you did to make a living at music, but he did't break through. When Mom was sick he sent us a CD of stuff he'd composed. It was fine. But I played it once. Had no desire to hear it again and I couldn't for the life of me remeber a single melody off it. I do love when he is back home the same time I am and plays the big pipe organ at my church though. ]

I like Gene Simmons view on talent:

"I'm an entertainer, not a musician. Musicians play at the Holiday Inn."

    Bull fucking shit.

It's not a zero sum game. Plenty of people without a famous father do get their shot.

Is it easy? Of course not. You have to work at it.

    hmmmmm.......

    No.

I have no problem buying Wal-Mart jeans but I wouldn't put them up against some name brands.

    There is a difference.

    Yes.

I'm sure there are clothes whose value is inflated far beyond their practical worth by the brand label, but there can be a real value difference between a brand like Levi's and a cheap store brand, whether you're talking jeans, shirts, or what-have-you. They may look the same in the store, but the cheap one will usually have lower-quality material and lower-end construction, so you'll start to notice fraying cuffs, loose threads, and popping buttons a lot sooner.

I've seen plenty of more talented strippers. If that's where she's going, I think we can prove that talent is not what makes the bucks.

That is a little bit my point. You can say "a vase is a vase." That is like saying "jeans are jeans." Someone with a basic knowledge might think all jeans are pretty much the same. Or all vases are pretty much the same. Or all nuMousketeers are pretty much the same, but they'd be wrong.

As for the rest, you can't have everything perfect.
