Ireland won't give Palestinian refugees the same protection as Ukrainians

TAOISEACH LEO VARADKAR has said that Palestinian refugees will not be granted the same temporary protection as Ukrainians and claimed that Ukraine is in a “different category”.

Thousands have been displaced internally in the Gaza Strip since Israel ordered the evacuation of over 1.1 million people from the north of the densely populated region.

While Varadkar said he thinks the treatment of Palestinian refugees is “very unfair” globally, he said that the group was “different” when it came to providing them with the same protection status as those fleeing Ukraine.

That is indeed disgraceful, and it is a shame given that the performance of Irish politicians in this crisis otherwise has been better than most.

Wait. Was this thread started with the expectation that I'd agree with Leo Varadkar on this?

Despite me very Irish surname, I’ve never been sentimental about my (alleged heritage…long story) heritage. No, I’m not anti-Irish, I just see my (alleged) ancestry as a curiosity, not something to be romantic about. That at least means I don’t feel any need to be defensive, or even give much thought to these kinds of situations.

My Old Man used to say the original stock was from Spaniards who washed up on the shore of Ireland after the British defeated the Armada. Anyway the lineage is a complicated issue that’s more personal than where the family name originated.
