I keep stumbling across great "gif" files to embed in various threads, but they're actually not gif files at all, but webm ones. There seems to be no native support for them in the way the board is configured, so using the img tag doesn't work for them, nor does just dropping the link (as it does for things like Twitter and YouTube). IIRC, the various tech companies that determine what features make it to the web or not are all pushing for webm to be a standard, so we may want to look at implementing it if we can. (Assuming, of course, it doesn't expose us to a whole host of security issues.)
Shouldn't the correct response be "make it so." This is a trek board after all so at least say engage. People forget where they are.
Can you give me some examples that don't work? gfycat videos should work with the mp4 link, giphy videos with the gif version.
Sorry, I can't find the page now, I just happened to still have the link to the image handy. It's from a Gizmodo article on robotic arms, but I've spent the past 15 minutes and haven't been able to find the story. And you need to check your browser settings. I've been able to get the link to work in Chrome, Opera, Vivaldi, Firefox, Brave, and TOR.
Short answer: I'm not making one, at least not anytime soon. Longer answer: There are two ways to do this: 1. Create a wildcard media embed. I don't know if this would actually work, but it would create a huge security hole if it did. 2: Create a full add-on to the board. Unlike vBulletin, XenForo, or at least XenForo 1.x, makes creating new BBCodes for anything except for embedding parts of specific websites a huge PITA. This isn't WebM specific. You can't directly embed an MP4 either. If you've got a specific site that has WebMs and embed code (say, via iframe), I'll do that, but otherwise, not happening. Also, WebMs don't work on Safari, or MobileSafari, which means iPhone users will not be able to see them at any rate.
