    Tron: Evolution
    The ps3 version.

Well I've been playing it for about a week now.
Let me just say if you don't love Tron then this might not be the game for you.
    So let's get to it...

    Should you buy this game?
Well, maybe. If you really like Tron. Otherwise you may want to pass.

Should you pay $60 for this game?

Hell No. It's not worth that much.

Should you pay $30 for this game?
I'd feel comfortable with that price.

    What's the gameplay like?
You can divide gameplay into two categories... running/jumping and fighting stuff. Both of which are pretty simple. (occasionally you drive a tank or light cycle)

Fighting stuff plays out like you'd expect. You have a light disk, you throw light disk at bad guys. There's a few combo moves and power moves, different types of disk that do different damage, and of course there is an XP based upgrade system. All pretty standard fare.

Running/jumping around the obstacle course of Tron world is your other objective. I just got done playing Mirror's Edge and the control system is ALOT like that, except dumbed down by a thousand and nowhere nearly as hard, which is fine by me as Mirror's Edge made me cry. I read where some people didn't like the system and wished it was more like Prince of Persia. I've not played that franchise so I can't speak to that. I personally didn't have a problem with the way it's set up.

However, you will probably die alot (especially at first) but the die-reborn-loadsceen is dang near instantaneous and you never start to far back from where you died, so it's not really a huge issue.

So what IS WRONG with it?

Number one, the camera sucks. It sucks hard. Really hard. It's jittery, it jumps around, it loses track of you, it's just plain bad.

If you don't mind constantly controlling the camera with your analog stick than the issue may not bother you, but even then it can be a challenge during combat.

The worst is when I'm in multiplayer and get hit into a corner. The camera just loses you and you disappear. There has been more than a few times when combat gets heavy and I get knocked in a corner and disappear. The thing is that it looks exactly the same as when another multiplayer kills you. So instead of trying to recenter the camera and find me again, I just stop playing - only to be shocked that I wasn't actually dead yet.

Number two - A downside of Tron is that everything looks the damn same. I hope blue is your favorite color. Every level, every room, the same. It makes the game feel very repetitive after awhile. Climb blue building, go in blue room, kill bad guys, repeat.

Someone designing the game must have realized this because I just got to a new level where everything is green and rocky.

    Number three
    - Something about multiplayer likes to kill my ps3.

I don't know what it is. It's not so much when I'm playing, but when I exit multiplayer to quit or go back to story mode. My screen freezes, crazy crap happens. One time my ps3 froze and it did the whole quick beeps/reboot thing, only it rebooted to a completely black screen. I thought my system was toast then. Then later it froze so hard I actually had to unplug it from the wall.

    Number four
    - I don't have a problem with this but I read where someone else did so I thought I'd mention it. I don't do alot of online multiplayer stuff so I was fine with what I was given. But some people seem to object to the fact that players could drop in and out of a match on a whim. You can drop in on any match regardless of how much time is left or whatever. I guess some people like the players to be locked in and the match closed when it starts. Didn't bother me. You can't pick your team mates though, I think the computer randomly assigns people. So no Wordforge team up. I also don't think bluetooth headsets work during the actual match because I hear people talking during the "lobby" screen but it gets quiet once play starts.

    So what say I ???

I like it, I'm glad I got it.

The story mode is decent enough.
The graphics look good, the opening scene looks great.
Has some Daft Punk music from the movie if that floats your boat.
The multiplayer is simplistic but fun.

The online light cycle battles are cool, but really I'm not too good at them. I spend alot of time driving into the wall. Thank god it's not first person view and you can actually see your light cycle. But you're still zoomed in pretty close. Someone said they changed their view to a more top-down viewpoint, but I've not found any options to do that yet.

XP from multiplayer carries over to story mode. So you can go play online for a while, build yourself up, go back to story and dominate.

Multiplayer probably is the funnest part of the game, atleast for me. Probably because I'm so new at it. I like the capture-the-energy-nodes game best (it has a real team atmosphere), but not alot of people play it. As you can expect the most popular game is just where you run around trying to kill the other guy.

So it's a good game. But not a $60 good game.
    And that's the rub,
...because the multiplayer part is really one of the higher points.
(Who wants a tron game if you can't battle it out with light cycles?)
But I've never seen more than 20 to 30 people online.
Maybe my search results doesn't show everyone, I don't know how that works.
    But I have to ask?
If you wait for this game to go down in price, how many people are still going to be playing the multiplayer then?

(BTW, nice trophy support to - I'm at 26% complete and I really haven't gone out of the way to get any of them)

I guess I should say something about the story too...

The plot is a bridge between Tron and Tron: Legacy. I think it's supposed to be five years after Tron, but I'm not sure. We see that ISOs are relatively new beings, but have been around for long enough to fight for equal rights. We see Flynn, Tron, and Clu all playing nice with each other. Then Clu decides to wipe Flynn and Tron off the grid so he can get rid of the free-thinking-no-purpose ISOs in favor of the purpose-driven-programs like himself. After it all goes down, you as a System Monitor program loyal to Tron must try to defeat Clu and save the ISOs.

Bruce voices Tron, Olivia voices Quorra or whatever her name is, but looks like a no show for Jeff Bridges.

I've been in the fence about this one. As soon as I see a good dip in price, I'll jump on it.

In other Tron related news, Disney Interactive just laud off half on it's 700 man workforce. I wonder if disappointing sales of Tron Legacy and Epic Mickey are why? I blame the $60 price point for games. If they were $40 or so, I think they'd see better sales.

I would have expected Epic Mickey to sell really well. It's all my cousin wanted for Christmas.

I hope somebody here buys/rents this soon. I'd love to see some Wordforge-Light-Cycle-Action.

I plan on biting when the price is down to the $20-30 range, but I'll be getting it for the PC. A nice deal on this game would have been if they'd included the old arcade version along with it, perhaps as a sub-game within the game.

Hmm... the PSN store does have some extra downloadable content, it's four more multiplayer levels with a classic Tron light cycle grid.

    I can't believe I'm still playing this.
Someone here should totally get it.

I even bought the extra maps last week, including a classic tron arena.

Waiting until I see it for about $19.95 or less- then I'll bite.

I like Tron but I'm in no hurry with this one.

    That's the thing.
The story mode really kind of bites.
The glory is in the online play, and then it's a small core of really good players. And that might be the appeal, you kind of get to know these people and the way they play.

But by the time this drops to 19 bucks the online play probably won't be worth anything.

I laugh about the complaint about the bad camera, simply because EVERY 3D game ever made with a third person perspective has a terrible camera, and that is 99.9% certain never to change. That said, the game sounds passable, but I'll definitely just pass. Never seen Tron so I'm not really a fan to begin with, and I avoid multiplayer like the plague, so there is zero appeal in it for me by the sound of things.

Just got this one via GameFly. It's an interesting departure from a typical platformer/fighter/action/adventure game and until I got the hang if it, I was very frustrated with it and almost put it down. I'm glad I stayed with it, though. The controls are a little loose and the camera does leave a lot to be desired, but I've seen a lot worse.

Para, are you on my friend list? I'm hyperhealer3. Congrats on the platinum trophy!

    oh....

So what time are you on? I'll look for you.
Alpha the platinum isn't hard to get, but it may require multiple play throughs. I think I had to go through 3 times. I think you can cut that down to 2 if you start on hard and use the guide above to find everything.

BTW, for those not interested in online play...
I too never played online until recently. Let me say it is a WORLD of difference. There is a huge leap between a computer opponent and a human opponent.

Oh I'm well aware of that. But most of what I play is RPGs, which suck online, or are games designed around single player, where the multiplayer is either nonexistant or tacked on. And even games with good multiplayer I never play online because I just don't find it fun. Maybe something to do with being an antisocial jackass, I dunno :P

I just read that I should jump online and level up before it becomes too difficult to earn a trophy. Sooo... Not yet.

-edit- if its one of those beat-a-match kind of trophies just start a private match and I'll let you beat me.

You won't reach level 50 on one play through.
I don't remember where exactly it happened for me. I'm thinking it was the end of the second play through.

Technically, since you're renting the game, even if you miss it and get everything else - you could just delete your save file, start new, level up first thing in the game grid. Deleting the save file should have no effect on your trophies so this would give you the platinum.

edit- i just typed all that out to realize it was already in the paragraph you quoted. Uh, nevermind.

I haven't been on cause I'm kind of bored with the games I've got. I've been playing Burnout Paradise, but I'm not the biggest racing fan. I'm really waiting for the store to reopen so I can start infamous. I haven't been in the game grid cause I have all the trophies, and I'm trying to milk my existing games for trophies right now.

But I'll try to pop Tron in tonight and mix it up.

Dang I was on for hours tonight, no Alpha.

This weekend I'll be online and mixing it up!
