It is possible to document US citizen status once a person commits a crime (as shown in Steve's post. But, just assuming because someone is in the US without citizenship or approved visa status does not constitute a crime - which was my point.

There are very solid estimations of the size of populations of undocumented people in different areas of the US.

There are solid records of the numbers of people arrested,and solid records of the numbers of people convicted.

There are solid records of the visa status of those people, with many areas reporting stats on the visa/citizenship status of those arrested and convicted.

That's how we can possibly know that.
