This morning here in NJ it was snowing when I got up. Just a covering of big fluffy flakes, and it was coming down like it meant it. Started the car right away to warm it up and melt the windows clean. Let it run for a few minutes while I did the bathroom thing. Then went out and cleaned the half-inch covering off the car. Left for work 10 minutes early. Snow on the side roads was packed within an hair of being ice, so it was slow going. The mains were clear of snow but wet, and since it was right at freezing we were all taking it easy in case of black ice. The highways were slow and cautious, with only the centers of the lanes clear and little drifts on the inside shoulder. Of course I needed to hit the washers every few minutes to clear the roadsalt buildup. 20 miles of slightly more-annoying-than-usual driving - bad weather in the dark, my favorite kind of commute . As I got off at my exit near work the snow stopped. I parked in the underground garage just in case it came back. An hour later it was bright and sunny and there wasn't a fucking cloud in the fucking sky. I must have a long way to go up the karmic ladder.
Supposed to snow here, Sunday...fortunatly, my truck is still in the shop and I don't have to deal with it.
Karma or perspective? Not to be one of those annoying, happy all the time, overly optomistic types, but I have fond memories of situations like the one you just described. Snow seems to always bring a soft silence with it...a nice break from the usual noise bustle of the day. Sorry to bitter-buzz killer!
Nothing worse than just enough snow to screw up driving, but not enough to sled on. Call me old fashioned (or maybe I got spoiled growing up in northern Illinois and then Wisconsin) but once winter hits, snow should be there until spring. None of this come-and-go snow that seems to be happening more and more these days. Not saying global warming is real, but I wouldn't invest in toboggans and snowmobiles stocks if you know what I mean.
I actually love that when it happens on a day I don't have to drive to work. Being snowed in on a saturday or over Christmas break is just fine with me. But 30 years of 20-mile commutes that can take up to 3 hours take the youthful blush off the joy of snowfall.
7 miles an hour for 3 hours? Living in a state where guns are illegal? Dayum. I'd have left long ago. Isn't there an alternate route? Couldn't you get a horse or a dirt bike or something? If I spent 6 hours a day driving to an 8 hour job I'd be a might testy.
Got about 3", here...I don't go out much on Sunday...or till Tuesday, so all the dumbasses will have had plenty of time to hit the ditches.
See, this is what I'm saying. If you're lucky enough to live in a "real winter" area, once a solid base of snow gets established and packed down, you know what you're dealing with and people get established in the winter safety mindset. It really makes things safer in the long run than come and go snow. But few are in that situation unless you live in Minnesota for example.
It's been snowing here all day. About 3" on the ground now. I hope we don't end up using our snow day tomorrow. I'd rather use the snow day on a nice spring Friday sometime in April.
Well, the 3 hour thing only happened once, and only on the way home. Partially my fault - I thought taking local roads would be faster in case the highways were jammed up. Turned out to be the other way around. But it established my "stay the fuck home when it snows" rule, followed ever since.
We've just had some snow here in DC. Unfortunately, "D" and I were hosting Kassette this weekend and we had to venture out to take her home. What should have been about an hour round trip wound up taking more than three hours. Plows haven't even touched most of the roads yet. Luckily, the mighty Jeep powered thru with no difficulties.
still snowing out there. We'll either have a late start or a snow day tomorrow. . Might as well have a snow day---I have bus duty after school on Mondays and I'd rather not have to deal with snowballs.
