Outside the Northeast and west coast it sure is. Just as outside the South and Rockies area the Republicans aren't exactly model conservatives. Parties this large can never can shoehorned into one word labels. At any given time one part or another certainly may be more dominant, but that doesn't invalidate the existance of other wings.

Liet is from the Northeast, no? New York, specifically, IIRC. Somehow I doubt Liet was thinking about Democrats in Nebraska when he said that.

Ah, now that would have made for a far more readable thread indeed.

Even on the west coast and in the Northeast it is pretty damned moderate by local, though not always national, standards. Which helps explain why the Democratic tent is so big: leftist and rightist can be pretty much the same anywhere in the country, but moderate can't.

Really, if you look at individual issues, from Iraq, to abortion, to gay rights, to economic regulation, the Democrats are on average pretty close to the U.S. political center. It's why the Republicans are so big into voter purges and fear tactics: they can't win on substantive issues.

I live in a blue state, and I can count the honest to goodness hippies on my fingers and toes, and they're mostly in Portland.

    Well duh....

Obviously he wasn't thinking about Nebraska.

Nebraska is flyover country which means in Liets world it doesn't exsist.

Therefore it is acceptable to laugh at his assertion that Democrats are moderate since the ones on West Coast and on the North East Coast are anything but moderate.
