Don't know if this particular article and statement has been posted, but according to the article, the Titan had visible flaws in the carbon fiber hull. The hull had visible flaws that were evident and Oceangate still used the submersible, that goes beyond arrogance and is incredibly stupid. Anyone who saw the flaws and let the hull be used is criminally negligent at this point.
Mythbusters did a diver implosion, the results were at 153psi, at the Titanic the pressure is almost 6,000psi.
I wonder if this guy had insurance. A lot of reguilations for extreme sports or adventures come from having insurance and needing insurance for your business to advertise and operate. When I ran my paintball field the regs for HPA came from needing a licensed HPA operator and we could not get insured if we didn't. If we did not have insurance we could not operate a paintball field. We could not get property and business insurance without extreme sports insurance, or without having a licensed professional for HPA on staff. I can tell you that once any carbon fiber wrap used for HPA was visibly damaged you had to replace it. There was no repair because repair didf not work with HPA materials. As for liability this company is probably shielded from the owner's assets and it will be a problem holding them accountable as they were operating in international waters. The only hope for a settlement to cover the losses for the families would have been legitimate insurance for a risky business. Even property and business insurance probably have clauses eliminating their liability for this sort of activity as it falls out of standard coverage. They can probably get a ruling against the LLC and maybe some parent corp, but good luck because those entities are beaing cleared iof any assets, or never owned the assets to begin with.
I think this advertisement is more the fault of @Bill Carson who has created an imploding sammich through the sheer force of his idiocy and killed many people.
Huh. I just realized this: There’s the legend of a novel that basically “predicts” the Titanic disaster (a couple of similarities that make people go “Ooooh! Spooky!”). The name of the ship in that novel? The Titan. The phrase “Tempting fate” seems apt here.
You're talking about Futility? Other than the name of the ship and an iceberg and a bunch of people die there isn't a lot of similarities. It's more about this crew member who refuses to cover up an accident, survives with some passengers on the berg, gets to NY and starts his life over. It's like if he wrote about a blimp named Hinden blowing up but there's some spys in London or something. It was utterly forgettable beyond being tied (barely) to a historical event.
Hey, it turns out that Captain Crunch wasn’t a total monster. https://apple.news/AdjKwRlm5R_WZkSGCPVm7zQ I can’t imagine what it’d be like to descend into the depths of the ocean to the sounds of “Achy Breaky Heart.” I’d probably smash the portal myself.
