More trouble for Microsoft... Two of my friends had 360's that scratched their games - it ate 4 copies of Dead Rising and their BulletWitch. Perhaps its not widespread but it is an issue. Though to be honest this seems like someone looking for some money, two games and he wants 5 million dollars? Did losing Gears and Madden cause him emotional pain?
only really fucks the disks up if the box isn't on a stable surface. 5 mil for two games fuck that guy.
From what I hear while the 360 does have issues with damaging discs, the cause 95% of the time seems to be people either mounting the console on an uneven surface, or moving the console while it is active.
Or throwing sand into the disc drive. I personally think that all Madden NFL discs should be scratched up.
Waitaminute, I thought Xboxes could stand on end?? When you look at the ads, it sure appears that way. I've got a perfect 5" space right beside my TV where something like that could fit.
They can, the issue is an uneven surface where it will either be on an angle or be able to wobble. And definitely never move a 360 while it has a disc inside, I've heard a couple of people tell how they have done that and had the console make a similar sound to an angle grinder.
And the exact fucking thing happens if you move a computer around or have it at a goofy angle when its optical drive is reading a disc. Fact is, they are spinning a disc at a ridiculous speed while precariously balanced on a tiny little turntable. Yet you see no one suing optical drive/computer manufacturers. Nobody suing producers of DVD players. Because people aren't stupid enough to move that shit around. This guy saw that Microsoft admitted a mistake and he wants a five million dollar piece of the action. Fucking bullshit. Meanwhile, there is a hell of a lot of other causes for this as well. Too much damage to the console could create a very slight imbalance in the tray. Not good. Getting angry and jumping up and down could do it too. Hitting the power button on the console hard while the disc is spinning could do it too (seen a friend of mine do that on many an occasion, but he's been lucky so far). Finally, anyone who lets the console eat through five goddamn copies of something is, I must say, a little off their nut. Considering that could have bought them a new console, let alone actually shipping it off to Microsoft to have the optical drive replaced. There is a key difference here between a console red-ringing and a console creating rings on a disc. The former is usually Microsoft's fault. The latter is usually the customer's.
Kyle, its a matter of degree... having a table that is a little bit unlevel can cause scratches with a 360. They barely gave it any clearance. Other optical readers need to be banged around or actually moved while using to scratch media. I should also say that 5 million dollars in damages is totally reasonable for the durability / game wrecking that MS does... but not to one person. Frankly MS probably owes far more than 5 million, it's just spread out across thousands of people.
Erm...I dunno about this one. I can move my PS2 just fine while it's running. No scratched disks. I can move my DVD player just fine. Same with my old Discman and other CD player. So from past experience, most people would think that moving a disc-based media player would be just fine, then suddenly, the Xbox betrays them and scratches up all their discs. Did the Xbox 1 have this problem as well? It's not really rational for the Xbox fan boys to defend this faulty shortcoming, IMO. Having scratched discs from moving your electronics device is not "normal" nor should it be expected.
Well first i'm not a xbox fanboy and the only thing with a CD that should be moved is a diskman (walkman whatever they were called) Found with PS1's and PS2 move it around when it was running messed up the disks just as much as it does with the 360. it's the same with all drives that slide out, PS3 could get away with it because there less space to move around it in it's drive. (from what i remember seeing)
The XBox did not fucking betray them. If anyone is stupid enough to move that shit like that, they had it coming. You lucked out with your PS2 (provided you had one of the thick ones) and your DVD drives. The other devices you mentioned? Well, see, they all have the disc either "clip in" to the rotating platform, much like laptop tray optical drives, or they have a slot-loading system, much like laptop slot-loading optical drives. It's an interesting decision. People tend to fuck up clip-in drives a hell of a lot more, including damaging the exposed laser, and slot-loading drives are kind of expensive. It's a trade-off, and I think Microsoft dared to expect people to not be idiots.
Well, i read a while ago that the scratches come from the fact that the drive in the premium version doesn't have pieces of rubber around the laser-lens, thus increasing the chance of scratches... The core version does have those pieces of rubber... Don't remeber the brand of the drive anymore though...
That isn't as much daring as it is stupid- always assume your end user isn't as smart, cautious, or well informed as you are and build accordingly. In this way you ensure that less of the problems that can arise during the lifetime of your product can be blamed on you. Spend a little more, lose a little less.
Spend a little more, and the price of the console goes up. They made a tradeoff, because, as much as people think otherwise, Microsoft doesn't expect its customers to be endless, idiotic fonts of money who want to spend, spend, spend. Y'know, people who aren't Scorponok, whose only reply to a very technical reply was a pre-school level insult with an emoticon attached to it. At the very least, he's got idiotic well-covered.
Erm...dude, please read this thread: http://www.wordforge.net/showthread.php?t=48160 Have the rules changed?
Was not a fan of the original xbox at all. Xbox 360 is much better, Xbox live is very well executed. Personally I wouldn't get one, I'm more into PC games. Xbox 360 is definitely a pretty solid console, especially for folks who don't have PCs that can run new games. If I was more into football games/hockey games etc (I used to be but lost interest recently for some reason), I'd definitely get a 360.
