I couldn't get past the first song. The CGI animals are really offputting, I don't think "live action" realism works very well for animals. Also the underwater hair CGI was very distracting. I was actually impressed at Melissa McCarthy's portrayal of Ursula (at least what I saw), because I initially thought it was bad casting choice. I couldn't give a crap what ethnicity/skin color Ariel or any of the other mermaids are. Halle Bailey seemed OK, I just wasn't into the movie for other reasons.
(As UA's liberal strawman) No!!! I demand you love this movie!!!! Nothing less than glowing praise! Nothing!! Less!! Haha! No. But could you just imagine?
You totally Tereruined it when you put the superfluous word joke in there. The whole post would have been just fine if you just said Diacanu as we would have all gotten the meaning. Have I included enough words to make my quota? Ahhh, there is the joy I feel from hearing the gentle clatter of my keyboard as I totally make another wall of words. Why do I always have to make every thread about me? BTW I totally NFT the word Tereruined.
Got reminded that I should check out the live-action Little Mermaid and, well, it was about what I thought it would be. I don't think I have watched the original in like 20 years so I don't really have any strong memories or deep love for it. The remake was alright. I would have liked it more if they gave Ariel more to do, it being 2023 and all. Halle Bailey has a great voice, it seems to me. I don't think she's a particularly good actress though. I wanted more with Ursula. There is an Awkwafina rap that I'd heard about being bad, but was truly wretched. I am surprised that the guy behind Hamilton, Moana and Encanto is presumably responsible and that there were no new bangers from him. As to the race aspect, I thought it was interesting that they gave Triton (played by a Latino actor) daughters of pretty much all races. Triton got around! And similarly, they made a point that Eric's mother is apparently not his biological mom, and to make her black so when she talks about how blackity-black-black Ariel is not from their world it doesn't come off as racist.
I'm glad Halle Bailey's in The Color Purple so she'll have a chance for her talent to shine under an actually good film this year.
