Set up for what? You can't see the advantage to having a bunch of monitoring stations out in the oceans that are also a communication network? And there's no "maybe" about it, those people on that plane are dead. The only question is why.

There's already a large number of them out there. They're not interconnected to one another, and they can't be used to communicate across the oceans, but they do exist. If there had been a larger network of them, the Indonesian tsunami wouldn't have killed so many people.

You've answered a different question than the one Dayton asked, and his question was an attempt at misdirecting my hypothetical, so it's no wonder you two are confused.

Were F-16s scrambled on 9/11? Why, yes they were. One was even unarmed, but the pilot was prepared to ram Flight 93 if ordered.

"What sort of operator is going to 'pull the trigger' on killing a planeload of innocents to get a couple people?" Volpone asks. Not just the people, necessarily, but what the people might have with them.

The question I raised was a hypothetical. It's the kind of thing that gets bounced around in wargames scenarios. The kind of rigid-think that says "No one would ever commit suicide to ram a plane into a building...and they certainly wouldn't do it armed only with box cutters" is what's exploited by people willing to do exactly that.

As far as Dayton's concerned, unless it actually has happened, it never can. Unless Tom Clancy wrote about it, and then nothing's too implausible. :garamet:

Actually, IIRC some of the chickens in his dad's coop gamed the hijacked airlines in to skyscraper scenario. They concluded a heavy cruiser from Starfleet would fly too close to the sun spinning it in to a trajectory bringing it to 9/11/2001 in time to take a bit of space battle to the terrorists. If only the chickens had been a bit more reasoned with their analysis, Dayton might have been able to write a letter to President Bush warning him of the danger.

It seems the chickens were expecting a JJ Spock, but got a Roddenberry version instead, who was a real stickler for not interfering with the time line.

and those kinds of posts are why I do not like you gul.

You make a pretense of friendship by repeatedly hitting "like" on a persons posts, even post something of your own agreeing with them, yet then don't hesitate to belittle or demean the same person.

At least I'm consistent in my treatment of people here.

I think you take the Like button too seriously.

I kind of equate it to what rep used to be. I thought that was the intent when the changes were made.

In that case, I think you took rep too seriously as well.

You're not alone in that, BTW. Way too many people here took it too seriously.

I hit "like" on a lot posts.

    Even Garamet posts.

Now do you think I'm making a pretense of friendship by doing that?

Dontcha love that? There are a handful of people here who act all surprised when you "like" something posted by someone they perceive as your "enemy." It's as if they've never left the schoolyard...

It isn't quite like the schoolyard. On the schoolyard you know who the people are.

And you know where they live.

Good point. It's actually more insidious, because the anonyms think they can say whatever they like without repercussions.
