My bar has been building a serious whisky collection the last few months, often from off licensed sources/ We recently came across 24 40oz bottles of 1977 Canadian Club! I know it doesn't age in the bottle, but damn is it ever smooth compared to it's modern peer.

Pleasantly surprised by 40 Creek's Barrel Select... not top shelf, but definitely second tier.

Home, kitten therapy achieved, and now numbing my hatred of liberlism, airline terminals, and traffic with whiskey.

Fuck all you leftist, commmunist libtards. Every day I log on here since my absence I just shake my head. Nothing ever changes, except the names the of the pretentious D-bags that think they can hide themselves under new monikers. Haven't changed my username once since the first day I signed onto this train wreck.

Yeah, Anna Yolei and Shepherd, I'm looking right at you.

I used to like single malts a lot. The smokier, the more bird shit in them the better. Now I'm more of a bourbon/dark rum guy.

Imma fan of Captain Morgan Spiced, but Laphroaig is the Dark Goddess At Whose Smoky Teat I Suckle.

That said, tonight is vodka and coke night.

Well, okay, as I'm nothing if not an alcoholic I'll weigh in.

I think Spiced Gold is too sweet. It's too sweet for me on its own, and it's definitely too sweet with coke. One reason I buy bourbon and Canadian whiskey is they are the only whiskey sorts you can mix. I've never, ever found a Scotch blended that really goes well with any flavored soda except, well, soda. I.e. mineral water. Malt? please... The only worse mixer is aquavit.

However, if you do like Spiced Gold I would definitely recommend Plantation (Barbados dark.) Now, absolutely _anything_ in their assortment will do, they're all great. They're all pretty sweet but wonderfully complex; if you're talking Barbados rum they're top notch. If you want to mix them, use Red Bull Coke. That's a very dry cola.

I have spent my whole life without finding a good white rum -i.e., one with character. I found one just two weeks ago. It's called "Noble Selected" from Trinidad, not sure about its availability at your place; it looks like it's 10 bucks in a grocery store yet it's 30 bucks here (yeah, you know, Sweden) but it's actually great stuff. Beats the pants off white Havana Club.

Speaking of Havana Club, 7yo is my golden standard both as a simple sipper and a mixer. Perfectly balanced semi-dry, works well with almost anything or neat. You'll never tire of it, same as you likely will never tire of regular Jim Beam if you like bourbon (though HC is a bit higher standard.) (Diplomatico's assortment is similar in style.)

If I want to mix a rum and coke inexpensively I'll use a French style Bardinet rum (dry, black) with coke. You can never go wrong with Angostura imo; lemon to taste. If it's to your taste, try a dash of cayenne. Make it drier, mix half with Red Bull Coke. (Yeah, it's a real good mixer, honestly.)

If you want an awesome rum none of your stuck-up friends would ever dare find a fault with try Ron Zapaca Gran Reserva. Better than any damn cognac I ever tried. Bloody expensive tho.

Not talking bourbon since you're American so you probably know alot more about bourbon than me. Like Bulleit Rye tho, but I'm a cocktail dude.

If you like Laphroaig try Talisker (if you haven't.) Laphroaig? Smoke, what smoke?

And tonight's Wiser and Cola night, I'm a cheapskate.

Tried Talisker but there's a sulphurous note to it. Laphroaig has the brine to help with the smoke.

Never found Spiced Gold too sweet, but then I keep it in the freezer and, if mixing, use Coke Zero.

Rumwise, I tend to go for the Wray and Nephew, mix it with ginger beer (or Vernor's ginger ale). Liking Plantation's pineapple though.

Funny thing there is that my "liberty" score on the compass hasn't really changed, only my "Economic" has slid significantly left.
Even funnier (funny strange, more than ha ha) is that some of that was at least partly inspired by Marso's using "Noblesse Oblige" as a plot point in his BSG reworking.

Seriously dude...you rationalized socialism and regulated economies for me.

Interesting; I don't remember painting the colonies in my rewrite as socialized in any real way, but I do remember a brief touching on what the economy of the refugee fleet might be like once things settled down. Of course, a civilization surrounded by a mortal enemy engaged in a 1000 year war, followed by a handful of survivors fleeing extinction- social norms are gonna get warped. :ramen:

Of course, someone who reads something is going to interpret it how they like, or at the very least filter it through their own belief set. So if there was something in there that hinted at a socialized or partially socialized society, it's an easy leap to make mentally. If you want to bend your mind on the socialism thing, read Kim Stanley Robinson Mars trilogy and see if you can make heads or tails of the whacked out 'gift economy' he tried to finagle into the story. It ought to leave you scratching your head.

Oh, I don't think you did socialsmisize them... if anything they came across as cyber samurai given the whole caste society. It was the phrase itself, that the first duty of being in power is that everybody else eats first.

I don't see that working with the Randian capitalism of this century... That only seems to be leading to a new feudalism. (which of course, the nu BSG touched on briefly with that work ship strike episode, and yours benignly embraced/evolved to include hereditary castes).

Maybe someday, but it was heading towards writing an episodic series for TV- a helluva lot of work. I'm about to publish my first real novel, and I'm already working on the sequel. My days of playing in other peoples' sandbox may be coming to an end. I've got my own sandbox (I've always had it, just never pulled the trigger until now), and all the issues, politics, nobility, villainy, ethics, and high-octane adventure you've seen me 're-write' in licensed genres are there. I've been building up to this for 30 years, and you'll find I'm mining my own fanfic for some of my own original ideas. (KC canisters, anyone? Buck Rogers?) You're on the list of peeps I plan to notify, if you promise to keep your yap shut. I'm publishing under my own name, and I don't want my actual identity readily accessible on these boards, unlike some of the other folks around here.

My friend, that is the essence of serving the public trust. The problem is that less than 1% of politicians actually engage in it. It's the root value of the military, law enforcement, and it should be the root value of any government that claims to serve the people rather than rule over them. It has ZERO to do with socialism, which at its root is the opposite of all those things. The government- the STATE- is not the end all be all. "Society" is made up of individuals with individual rights. The ocean is nothing but a collection of individual drops. You and I are the drops.

I tend to see society as the whole ocean, not just the drops of water... there still needs to be enough greenery on the seabed to keep the water "functional". Likewise, I'm not sure the state is and end at all, but rather a means like "economics"... it's a steering mechanism for the vehicle of societies. Regulation to keep that machine running smoothly and efficiently is naturally going to be required... like a fuel mix ratio would be. If too great an imbalance continues, the engine is going to either catch fire or die out.

I think ensuring being fed and having a bed should be the root value of all citizens rather than a claim of LE and MIL, but that's another discussion...
