I am thinking that we should change the rules in there to reflect the stance we have on Press Start and for the same reasons.

People get passionate about the material and I think allowing on topic trolling and flaming will solve a lot of the issues in there. If they want to call each other stupid for their opinions, who cares?

In fact, sometimes I think it should be reversed...most of the board like the Red Room and a few rooms no tolerance.

    Thoughts?

I think this is a good idea to a point. People get passionate about their TV shows and movies. To call a TV show "stupid" or "fucking dumb" or whatever is a valid opinion. Still, there is a fine line.

If someone says "You're a retard for liking the X Factor", I would consider that flaming and a warning should be issued. A statement like "Retards who like The X Factor should DIAF", maybe not.

Still, I think this stems from a larger problem on the site, in that WF has become extremely negative, partisan, and even toxic since I stopped visiting so often due to my social life picking up. It's gone from being like a couple who generally disliked and argued with each other but still enjoyed each other's company to a couple who now throw things at and assault each other over the pettiest differences. The moments of magic, they're just too short - they're over before they begin. (Kudos to the person who gets THAT reference. ;) )

We should really be asking the membership what, exactly, do they want from Wordforge? We all know generally, people are ok with the Red Room being the way it is, but what do they want the other rooms to be? Do they think the forum is better off with Red Room style rules in Media Central? Do they feel it should be acceptable to insult whole groups of fans? Should mild trolling of posters be allowed?

I also think there is a danger to sites like us to try and cater to too many tastes and types of people. And because we try to please everybody, we end up pleasing nobody. We should, at least in my opinion, pick a direction we want to go in, and go in that direction. There will be people who don't like it and leave, people who don't like it and go along for the ride anyways, and people who will stay. And hopefully, with a new direction, we can pick up more like-minded people and add to our users.

I am very open to considering trying new things...nothing can't be changed again if it doesn't work, after all.

And I do want a WF where people are happy to be here. It just seems like it's difficult to get people to really spell out what they want or what they want different.

Do you want to start a thread feeling out the membership? Might be a good beginning to your tour of duty. :)

If people want to call each other stupid and troll (whether on topic or not), why not just start the thread in the bloody Red Room?

The threads started in Media Central with the understanding that flaming and trolling are allowed will just degenerate into the same asinine battle of on-line personalities that many threads in the Red Room become. Do I really need a garamet vs. skinofevil shitfest in every Media Central thread, too?

I say "no." Leave Media Central a civilized place to talk about movies, shows, books, etc. Keep the nonsense out.

Well, that specific problem isn't one...skinofevil had me lock his account.

I don't think he liked the fact I won't play his lawyerball game.

And initially I was thinking like Press Start....you can insult the shows and elements of the shows all you want, regardless of how other people feel about it. Even "your opinion sucks" would be okay.

Turning it into insulting each other would still be a warnable offense.

I think Face's idea might be the best answer..

Allowing Red Room Rules threads in Media Central for people who want no-holds-barred discussion in there and everyone else will have the usual moderated threads they prefer.

Re: Sokar's warning. It should be reversed.

If we are going down that road and warning for people saying "Fuck NuTrek" then there are a lot of people who deserve warnings for flaming Voyager, Enterprise, Firefly, Insaneway Janeway, etc. How many people have been warned for flaming a TV show? Is this a consistent thing now?

I've said that should be the case in every forum. It was shot down on multiple fronts. Can't remember what they were at present though...
