So far this year I've put away 7 pints of peach preserves, 3 pints of sweet onion marmalade, and about 25 pints of pickles, all but the peaches from my garden...peaches came from a farmers market in middle Tennessee. I'm about to start canning tomato sauce.

I do some fusion. I make a jerk chicken pasta that's to die for if I do say so myself.

This isn't a normal Walmart - it's groceries only but it has pretty much any food you can think of (that other stores may not have) and all my favorite brands of course at good prices. It's either them or other chain stores, so it's six of one, half dozen of the other. There are no mom & pop grocery stores out in the suburban areas.

There used to be an awesome meat market (part of a local chain of Mexican meat markets) right outside the entrance to my neighborhood, but it closed. :(

Yeah, but I can get it all at Casa De Shoes. :) I got a smoker and a garden. There's a farm that's also a registered meat packer that sells their own pork and beef right down the road.

About ten minutes away is an ALDI store, and we have other upscale stores about twenty minutes away. Augusta is the second (maybe third) biggest city in Georgia so they have just about everything here. But I HATE busy traffic so I don't drive out of my way if I don't need to.

I'm with ya on traffic... everything above is less than 750' from my house.

Besides six sundays a year where it's a clusterfuck of tourism, not a bad deal.

the closest huge store is within walking distance, but I rarely bother going that far out of the 'hood if i don't have a reason

The answer is contained in the question: convenience.

No matter where you live and no matter how crazy your work hours are, there's probably a convenience store you can get to easily. If you're a low-income single parent, there can be a dozen different obstacles (whether or not you have a car, the cost of gas or bus fare, how easily you can shop with children in tow, what time you get off work, how flexible your boss is, whether you have energy to cook at the end of a long work day) to following anything other than the most convenient path.

Do American conservatives have ANY solutions to problems anymore?

They've developed this almost religious mania around the idea that the government can't do anything right and the Almighty Free Market will fix everything, so they just sit around doing nothing and then shriek every time somebody else attempts a solution that isn't 100 percent flawless in every way.

It's like having appendicitis and going to a hospital where one doctor wants to perform an appendectomy, while the other declares that you should just leave it alone. Then when the doctor who actually gives a shit does your appendectomy, the other one starts carping about how you wouldn't have had any postoperative pain if you had just done it their way.

Hell, that's pretty much everyone. I still have base access for the next year and groceries would be pretty cheap, but the base is also twenty minutes in either direction of work or home to get to.

I don't know how working moms do it, honestly

Yeah, I'm a low income single human with a food budget of about $10 a day. Convenience store prices aren't an option if I wanna eat more than once daily.

Most puzzling is when they oppose government intervention that will actually make the market freer, more competitive, and balanced.

Because almost every time Democrats propose that, well-connected Democrat cronies are the only ones who will benefit.

They'd truck in a special "platinum member's oxygen", released by trees surrounding the Reagan ranch.

Many, not all, of the poor DO deserve to be poor. Do you disagree with this? If so, why?

I know you weren't talking to me, but I disagree. Most of the world's poor are children, and no...they don't deserve it.

Because they haven't contributed anything to society. You look at the snot nosed kids waddling around. Did they fight Hitler? No. Did they help build Hoover dam? No. Did they create the Internet? No. Before they can reap the benefits, they have to sow some seeds.

Those are all examples of government doing things. So your point is that we don't have enough government doing things anymore?

Oh, fuck off. No child is starving when given 2000 calories per day. They are just upset that instead of cookies and potato chips they are given healthy balanced meals with plenty of fruits and vegetables. Someone had to be the responsible adult and tell them they cannot just eat junk and actually do have to eat their veggies.
