The video is un-fucking-believable. She's actually racing the train down the parking lot and even if a train hadn't hit her from the other direction she probably wouldn't have made it. And of course her kids weren't wearing seatbelts. In a perfect world this sort of shit would only kill the person who did it.
Oh for fuck's sake! I honestly hope that the mother survives long enough to discover that she killed her kids.
Looked like she was trying to commit suicide to me. Andrea Yates murdered her children. Maybe this broad was trying to take her kids with her. It's not unheard of.
She'll have guilt! She shouldn't have to go to prison! It's not her fault! She was abused/on medication/late for church! It's all thr trains' fault for going too fast! She'll sue the city for not having those train crossing arms! She didn't know there was train!
The two kids that lived, I wonder how old they are. It really sucks to be them right now, with two dead siblings and a stupid mother.
Possible, but I doubt it. Sounds like she was just too stupid to live. Sadly, her stupidity killed innocents.
"You kids be shut up right now or I swear to God, I'll run this minivan into a train!" She didn't make an empty threat. She should be an insperation to all parents. She went that extra mile to discipline her kids. She deserves a medal, not condemnation.
I don't know. That looked so bloody reckless it belies rational thought. You'd have to be Darwin stupid to do that. I think the video narrator's wrong though. If you look really closely, she didn't get nailed by both trains. She got nailed by the one going the other way. Keep it straight. That's the excuse for parents who forget to drop their kids off at daycare and leave them to cook in a hot car all day. They have overly stressed lives and a change in routine. They feel terrible about it, so they shouldn't go to prison. It could happen to anybody. Psychiatrists say so. The guilt is punishment enough. What's a little heatstroke in a car that's 120 degrees on the inside when you're strapped in and can't move?
Yhe sad fact is that sometimes the Darwin is carried out on the next generation. Either way, the end result is the same.
Still not as fundamentally inexcusably stupid as failing to signal lane changes in heavy (or any) traffic :IMHO!:
This level of idiocy isn't uncommon. And be honest, which of us hasn't come up to the train tracks with the lights flashing, looked down the tracks and saw that the train was a hundred yards or so away and wasn't moving very fast and decided to hit the gas and get on across. I did that many times. Never with my wife and daughter with me though. Whenever I'm carrying passengers I automatically shift into cautious mode.
Her mistake wasn't trying to outrun or jump the train. Her mistake was in using a minivan instead of this:
[action=Elwood]raises his hand[/action] Being a life long railfan and in law enforcement has shown me the startling reality about the danger of grade crossings.
How many people in the United States get run over and killed by trains every year? Isn't it in the thousands? I remember one train here in Arkansas that killed two people in cars just four hours apart. The first one, a guy tried to run the gate and was killed. The engineer was so shook up emotionally (I've heard thats one of the real downsides of working on a locomotive, you inevitably see people die) that he had to be replaced. The train continued on after awhile then a man at another crossing apparently committed suicide by driving his car deliberately into the path of the train.
I have no idea but I know that this past summer we have had more idiots racing to cross the tracks or just sit on the damn tracks and get killed. One was a former sports star too.

I think people try to outrun trains because they look too serene and efficient. We need to start nailing rotting cow corpses and paint human skulls onto the front of these things to give drivers pause when they line up to try to beat the Death Train of Doom.
There'd still be some jackasses - usually male and under the age of consent - figuring he can be the one to beat the thing and not get nailed.
No, nicked it from here. Did you watch the video? She was literally racing the train and had very little lead on it when she crossed the tracks.
Yep. It looks from the video like the conductor might have even been able to see her doing that and was thinking to himself "please, please don't let this woman be as stupid as she probably is".
