Message Boards was a fad. The only ones still around is reddit, the chans, Yahoo still has boards for stocks and MSN. Facebook and twitter and the like are the next generation of the bbs. For me I got burned out on it after about 10 years and got into other things.

You know what killed most big social network platforms? They got bought out by someone else. Friendster died because FB wanted their patents, so they bought the company and killed it. MySpace, believe it or not, is still alive.

I'm old enough to remember when everyone thought that the final form of the internet would look like AOL. How'd that turn out for us?

If you're not familiar with Vannevar Bush, you would do well to read up on him. Essentially, in the 1940s he came up with the model for how computer desktops should work. Its what we use today. He even used the term "desktop" to describe aspects of it that we would think of as a "computer desktop." Remember, he was doing this before computers were really a thing. Like, there were maybe two or three (at best) on the entire planet when he thought of this.

Huge swaths of content that could once be found on the web is no longer around, either because the companies responsible for the stuff have gone under, or the owner has deleted it. The Internet Archive with their Wayback Machine attempts to preserve as much of the web as they can but even they admit that they can't hoover it all up.

There's a myth popular amongst Americans that at one point in time, a person could graduate high school, land a decent-paying job, and be set for life. Regardless of when you might think that this was true, it is just a myth. Yes, for certain periods of time, it was possible for an individual to make enough money working a single job, without any kind of post-high school (or really, even having completed high school) education but it doesn't matter how you break things down by race, religion, or any of a number of things, that was not the case for quite possibly, the majority of Americans in that demographic. Yeah, sure, if you lived in a place like Detroit in the '50s, that might have been possible. But how about a farmer in a place like Alabama? Could he afford to leave the farm and travel to Detroit to find work? Was there anything comparable to that in their area? Probably not.

You want to know what the real difference between now and then was? And why this probably has clues to Musk buying Twitter and FB going off the rails on some shit? I hope so, because I'm going to lay it out for you. The difference is that now, even homeless people have the ability to access a global platform for anything that they might want or can afford. Suppose, that in 1950 (for example), a homeless guy writes a letter to the editor of his local paper. How many people are going to be able to see that? Hundreds? Maybe thousands? You put something on the internet, and just about anyone on the planet can access it.

Stop and think about this for a moment. Uber-lefty types like Upton Sinclair or George Orwell (to name but two) wrote some pretty scathing exposes about poverty. Both of them did so when they had the resources where they didn't have to worry about having to scramble to meet their day-to-day needs. (Manuscript format restrictions are a bitch, and it's hard to use a typewriter when you're homeless.) But now? If you've got a cellphone (not even a smartphone) you can spread your thoughts to everyone on the planet who has access to the internet. (And even some who don't.) A homeless person probably can't create the kind of headspace needed to write a long essay, work of fiction, or whatever, to be published by traditional means. That limits the views and opinions one can hear.

Now? Not so much. This is a problem. See, even lefties love to trot out the idea that from ~1945 to ~1980 one only needed a single breadwinner in the family, so this is hardly a delusion limited to one party. Nah, the truth is that this was the period of time when there was just enough of an expansion on who could reach a large audience that some folks who worked blue-collar jobs had enough leisure time that they could write about their experiences and get them published. The same is not true of a whole lotta other folks in that time period. Since it is practically free to post on the web, we're now starting to hear from actual poor people on a global scale. This bothers the oligarchs.

Because now it's impossible to say that every poor person out there deserves it, is stupid, or "isn't really poor, they're just cheap." Not only that, but they have thoughts and feelings too! So, if you're a rich person telling yourself that poor people are poor because they didn't get a decent education and suddenly you're bombarded with people who've got a good education and are also poor, that's a bit of a mindfuck. And we know how some people are when it comes to them: They'd rather embrace the delusion than the truth.

Big or small, we need to make sure that this place, and all the content here, is available to anyone who wants to find it. Because enshittification is a thing, and the current top social networks are about at that threshold where they get abandoned.

I’m not a WF administrator o an owner. I’m also not the one wondering about the future of WF. I’m just simple pointing out reasons why one might choose to leave or might not sign up in the first place. You’ve successfully created the echo chamber you so desperately wanted. Well, here are the results. Live with it or don’t. I don’t care.
As for the Democratic Party, they’re the party of slavery, the confederacy, Jim Crowe and now cultural Marxism so yeah, they have a history of racism. It’s just now they’ve racist towards whites.

    No, Bill.
    No.
Racism against "whites" is a canard. It serves no purpose except to muddle the waters that actual social justice has fought to clear for generations. What's happening is white folks are being held responsible for the system in which we *currently* live. Racism is not "reversing" itself, the racists are being called out. Now, if you think that affects you directly in that it makes you defensive, then some self-examination is in order.

As for "cultural Marxism," that's a bullshit term that means nothing. You want to talk about Marxism? Feel free to ask me, but there is no "cultural" Marxism. If anything, capitalism is still being capitalist in this country, the only difference is that it's cloaking itself in diversity to make it more appealing to a younger generation that is realizing it's pretty much just horseshit.

If "greed is bad' is "cultural Marxism" then it goes back to Charles Dickens, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, and Jesus Christ.
Guess we have to flush vast swaths of western thought down the toilet to appease the corporate overlords.
