Some of you who followed my Caymanian adventures in my Blue Room blog may recall that about a year ago I had a run-in with a local judge. At the time, I really couldn't say much about what happened. However, I think enough time has passed to allow me to tell my side of the story. Good for you. And yes, you're entirely right. The only remotely safe places for the press in the Caribbean are the US Virgin Islands....
Thank you, the one thing I've tried to avoid in dealing with those kinds of issues is to avoid coming across as a know it all American, but sometimes you just gotta speak up.
That's what I thought. But I gotta tell you that judge was dead-ass serious and if you think being in an American court room is intimidating, you should try it in a foreign country where the judges where wigs and robes and you know that you have no constitutional protections whatsoever. Like I said the real obstacle to getting some sort of constitutional protection in countries like that is that the current system benefits the powers that be (left of center, right of center, businesses, police, judges) by making sure the press doesn't get too uppity and start telling inconvenient truths. The press itself is complicit because the ones that go along to get along can get fat and rich. Compare the editorials at these two sites: caymannetnews.com and caycompass.com and then tell me which one struggles to make payroll and which is a license to print money.
