I'm running Windows XP. Sometimes when I open a folder, the window that pops up is missing the the very top title bar (complete with the big red X to close it). It's also missing the menu bar right below it. I try to use Alt+F4 to close the window but it doesn't seem to work. My next logical step is to restart my computer through the start menu, but it never let's me do that, so I have to unplug the whole machine.

It might be a virus, but then again I run AVG weekly. I usually leave my computer on for weeks at a time, but I set up my firewall to ask me before accepting incoming/outgoing connections (except with programs I regularly use such as Firefox and Trillian). It does seem to occur after leaving my computer running for at least a week.

I can't think of any that might have caused this. Has anyone here heard of this before?

(If no one understands what's happening, I'll try to take a screen shot the next time it happens)

So this happens only when your system has been on for a very long time, and it is fixed when you restart?

Or is that not the case?

Ahhh, well, my old puter would act "funny", if I ran it that long.

Turn it off every couple days, give it a rest.

I dunno if it's viruses, or virus residue, or teensy little flaws in Windows that build up after awhile and clog the works, or processer overheat, but things get strange if you run 24/7.

It seems to be the case, but would leaving it on for a week really cause such a problem? I'm sure regular people and businesses leave their computers and servers running for just as long.

Well, my other choice is an old copy of Windows ME.

I'd upgrade to Vista, but that just seems to be a rehash of ME from what I've heard. Plus I'm too lazy, and this old thing probably couldn't handle it.

I run my computer 24/7, without a problem. The longer my system runs, the smoother it operates. It could be an issue with your video card, or simply the font in your display setup.
