Since it was an accident, I don't believe that a homicide conviction was appropriate. The officer lost his job and the state awarded $2 million to the family of the victims. The officer also has to live with the guilt for the rest of his life. There's no resurrecting the victims, but as far as the law and civil decency are concerned, there's not much more than can be done as recompense.

Now, as far as officers being advised to roam around at 65mph without signals in order to "sneak up" on their targets, that should be outlawed. Better to let hundreds of violations go unpunished than to harm the innocent.

You hear the variations on that theme in our justice system all the time. I agree with it, in theory, but anyone who promotes it shouldn't need to ask how it is that such obvious, dangerous people avoid capture and imprisonment. If you're gonna tie the hands of law enforcement and the court system with a default bias in favor of the rights of the accused and public safety, you shouldn't be demanding answers for why so many obvious threats to civilized society are able to evade consequence.

Once you're actually fired as a cop, your career is over. Forever. Nobody will touch you with a 50 meter poll. It also closes a lot of very lucrative post-career doors within the community.

I think he and the agency can and should be held civilly liable. Also:

Seems pretty straight forward to me.

If the DA agreed, I'd go to for a 3 year suspended sentence and 5 years of probation.
