I watched so many food network shows about it during christmas time, I really want to try fruitcake now.
I know a guy who has a fruitcake for a roommate. It's a pretty sweet deal. He gets free haircuts, and doesn't have to do his own laundry or dishes.
I have heard the rumor that there really is only one fruitcake in existence, and everyone just mails it to each other in an endless cycle...
Well, I mean you could use it in the same manner, if you so chose. Although I think of fruitcakes being rather hard and crunchy.
You have been sadly and terribly misled. A good fruitcake is a thing of magic, especially when it has the crunchy icing on and has been allowed to sit for a few weeks. Yeah, it doesn't go off, it's too dense and not enough moisture for that, but obviously you want to keep it in an airtight container anyway. Traditional christmas cake icing needs at least a week to start setting properly, it should be really hard with nice soft marzipan underneath for contrast.
Only if it's made with crappy flour and fruit; the ones I get from Collins Street Bakery are absolutely delicious.
