This forum used to be The Brain Society, so I guess I'll put it here...

Basically, I need your help tracking down something. It's pretty vague, so either you'll know what I'm talking about or you won't.

About a decade or so back, there was a news clipping about a Russian political leader named Vladimir Zhirinovsky. He's fairly famous right now in Russian politics because of his fascist beliefs, so you can find anything about him fairly easily, but in this old clipping, there was also mention of a Russian Mystic that he was associated with. It said that this guy could heal people from sickness and make women orgasm just by looking at them, and he sounded a lot like Rasputin of old.

I am trying to find his name, but any links I click to Zhirinovsky or "Russian Mystics" either leave me with blanks or staring at a page about Rasputin.

Anyone remember what I'm talking about, or am I :whacko: ?

This is one of those things where you might be best off trying to find the original article you read. Do you remember what newspaper it was in? Maybe they have an online searchable archive.

If not, there's always the library but that could take a loooong time and get really tedious.

Newspapers have archives and for a few $ you can search them online. Some might even be free, as is searching the physical archives.

Thank you guys, and thanks esp. to Paladin. The name does not ring a bell, and I'm wondering whether it's another mystic instead, but it will have to do for now.

Speaking of mystics, do you guys believe in such things?

It doesn't seem to be as common to believe it in N. America or anywhere westernized, but there are many people in other countries who swear they exist.

I had a friend I went to college with - an African immigrant, and one summer, he went back to South Africa to visit relatives. He said there were witch doctors there who could make people sick just by looking at them. He didn't believe it at first, so he challenged two of them, who immediately stared at him and then he said he immediately felt a very painful stomach ache, like someone reached into his stomach and gripped it with a fist.

He seems to be a really level guy, and not one to make shit up just for the sake of it. I still am not sure what to believe.

Do you think that there are supernatural powers that some humans can control? There have, through the centuries, been stories of voodoo dolls, telekenisis, psychics, etc. that aren't just limited to one culture.

Just believing in the existence of something doesn't mean you can do it.

No, but it means that somebody ought to be able to do it, or why believe it?

Anyone else find it disturbing that she's got a Toys 'R' Us wallpaper behind her? It's like she's saying "C'mer kids! I wanna eat you!"
