I watched Robert Wise's "Run Silent, Run Deep" the other day and I was stunned at how much TOS owed to the film. Everybody, of course, knows that the episode "Balance of Terror" was basically cribbed from the film (or the movie "The Enemy Below," which cribbed from the book that this movie was based on) but so was the whole series. I have a feeling that they never tried to get him to direct an episode of the series and when they came to him to direct the first film, he wasn't exactly thrilled with the idea (until he saw the size of the check they were offering him). Oh, and elements of the TMP clearly were borrowed from RSRD. Spoilers if you haven't seen the film. Clark Gable plays a sub captain who loses his boat due to a torpedo attack in the Bungo Straits in 1942. He survives, and spends roughly the next year at Pearl Harbor doing a desk job that he hates, while obsessing over trying to figure out how to sink the Japanese ship that torpedoed his sub. When a sub docks at Pearl after the death of its captain, Gable's character pulls some strings and manages to get himself assigned as captain to the sub, when Burt Lancaster's character (who was the XO) should have gotten the command. There's a natural friction between Gable and the sub's crew. You get elements of The Caine Mutiny and Moby Dick (both of which were cribbed by Trek) in the film as well. Even TWOK snagged a few elements from the film as well. About the only difference between Trek and this film is that Gable's character dies at the end of the movie.
