    "Cat's out of the bag."

    01 x 08 "Litmus"

    About the episode:
In this episode one of the twelve models known as five or Aaron Doral returns, but as a suicide bomber who sets off a bomb. As a result, a tribunal is held and it is revealed to the public that the Cylons look human. The tribunal is held to determine if anyone else was involved and it's left kind of open if whether or not Boomer was.

    Caprica:
On Caprica, Helo is deciding whether to look for Sharon while he's being observed by other Cylons, Sharon being one of them. Helo's life is on the line as his actions will determine what the Cylons do with him. Ultimately they are determining if Helo is capable of falling in love with Sharon. This is the point where things start to get really interesting on Caprica.

    Verdict:
Let's face it, there aren't going to be a lot of bad episodes.

What's great about this episode is that, although we're obviously siding with Adama, he's totally in the wrong here. Sharon's a Cylon, Tyrol knows something's up and he's covering for her, and Adama just lets both of them off. If they'd had marines discreetly searching the fleet for copies of Leoben and Doral from the start, they could have stopped them earlier and possibly caught the other Cylons conspiring with them. Fuckin' Adama.

I liked the speech he gave Chief at the end, even though I disagree with it.

The episode is very notable for taking the Adama/Kirk model of a captain and clearly depicting a situation in which they're clearly wrong and in which they should probably be relieved. The weren't relieved because the episode just let that truth hang there. He was sucking almost as bad as Hillary on a Tuesday.

I know we are not there yet but I feel like the show started to really go off the tracks when they revealed the Final Five. Everything leading up to that was great and the particular episode (Crossroads, part 2) was amazing.

But I never really bought that those particular individuals were the secret Cylons. The show then had to do a lot of massive retcons to fit all the backstories back together. I could see Galen as on the of the Five (he had the weird experience in the Temple, he was attracted to Boomer, he has the technical/engineering skills) but the other character reveals just came completely out of left field. It seems like Tory, Anders, and the Tighs were just picked at random because they wrote themselves into a box and didn't know how to resolve the numbering issue.

I was kind of hoping the Final Five would be new characters (like the Light beings from the original series) who would be introduced to the show as an ambiguous third party with their own agenda. Distrusted by both Colonials and Cylons yet holding the final keys to Earth as well as the resolution to the Colonial/Cylon conflict. Would have been even better if Dirk Benedict could came aboard as the leader of the Five. Everything else on the show could have pretty much the same. Rebel Cylons and Colonials have a standoff over the Five and ultimately all three groups journey to ruined Earth, fleet wide depression leads to the Gaeta/Zarek mutiny, the shattered fleet is forced to rely on the Rebels and Five for help, showdown with Cavill over Hera, finding new Earth, etc...

Well, I guess it at least gave Tory and Anders something to do. They were pretty much just background characters up to that point.

"To carry out your divine will."

    01 x 09 "Six Degrees of Separation"

    About the episode:
I really liked this episode. It starts of with Baltar and Head Six arguing over God and God's plan to which Baltar is abandoned by Head Six. Unfortunately for Baltar, the real Six shows up with damning evidence that implicates Baltar in the attack. Turns out in the end the Cylons were framing Baltar, or were they? This episode gives us the strongest evidence yet that Head Six is in fact an angel because towards the end, Baltar is about to be executed and he prays to God and promises to carry out his will. At the last second, Gaeta finds out that the evidence was faked. This will eventually lead to a bigger and brighter future for Baltar. The question is was it it divine intervention or was it really fake?

    Caprica:
Helo and Sharon are on the run from Toasters and then finally get it on.

    Verdict:
Like I said, I really liked this episode. I like almost all Baltar centric episodes. I think he's a great weasel of a character, but also charismatic. This episode was a nice change up, but sadly no space battles.

"All of this has happened before, all of this will happen again."

    01 x 10 "Flesh and Bone"

    Population 47, 954

    About the episode:
The torture episode. In this episode the Cylon that Adama killed in the miniseries known as Leoben shows up among the fleet with supposed information. Starbuck is tasked with finding out what he knows. He claims that there's a nuke aboard one of the ships which turns out to be false. What he does mention to Starbuck is that (A She has a certain destiny and (B he claims that they will find Kobol and that will lead them to Earth. Another aspect of this episode is that Baltar's Cylon detector is up and running and Boomer volunteers to be the first test subject. Guess what, she's a Cylon, but out of fear, Baltar says nothing.

    Caprica:
Sharon meets with Six and Two to determine the fate of Helo. They are hell bent on Helo falling in love with Sharon. If he doesn't, Sharon is ordered to kill him.

    Verdict:
This episode is good because it does deal with torture and the notion that torture hardly ever produces results. At the time of this episode, this question of torture was a topic of discussion due in the US due to events that were playing out in Iraq. Again it's another powerful episode, no space battles. Also, this episode introduces the now infamous quote, "all of this has happened before, all of this will happen again." It's also the first time we see someone airlocked, but it won't be the last. I've noticed other space dramas have come up with other terms for it.

    "It's not magic, it's science."

01 x 11 "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down"

    About the episode:
In this episode Colonel Tigh's wife returns. In the previous episode Leoben laid suspicion that Adama was a Cylon and Roslyn kind of bought it. In this episode Adama is about to be tested, but he instead orders Baltar to test Tigh's wife Ellen instead, which even furthers suspicion from Roslyn. Head Six suggests to Baltar that Ellen may in fact be a Cylon. In the end Baltar claims that Ellen is, but Baltar and Head Six have a conversation that suggests Baltar was lying.

    Caprica:
Not much going on here. Helo and Sharon are still on the run while Toasters search the whole city. Helo questions Sharon about her stamina while Six and Two question Sharon's loyalties.

    Verdict:

This episode is mostly light hearted, but is balanced out with a few sprinkles of drama. Not bad.

"Sometimes you roll the hard six."

    01 x 12 "The Hand of God"

    About the episode:
I'm not going to say too much about this episode because it's late and I'm tired, but it has everything that Dayton claims this show doesn't have. It was pretty good and had some good character development.

I just watched two episodes of original BSG on Netflix and was thinking the same thing. It had, for lack of a better word, a humanity about it that nuBSG never had. The people in BSG cared for each other. In nuBSG it was like straight drama between all the characters all the time.

Plus the copy on Netflix was terrible. I felt I was watching an old VCR tape that had issues. It looked really bad in some shots.

"I would be fortunate to have your intellect and your popularity right by my side."

    01 x 13 "Colonial Day"

    Population 47, 898

    About the episode:
In this episode Tom Zarack returns as a delegate of Sagitaron. Zarac calls for a vote for a vice President, which eventually leads to Baltar getting the vote. This will become extremely important later on.

Caprica:Helo and Sharon are about to raid some sort of military installment when Helo sees another Sharon and finally figures out that Sharon is in fact a Cylon. This is the moment it's all been leading up to, but there's definitely more to come.

    Verdict:
The first half of this episode is kind of dull, but there are some funny moments, but the second half is what makes this episode good. First you get a glimse of how much of a power hungry prick Zarack is and then you see Baltar becoming Vice President and a few funny moments there. At the tail end we finally get to the reveal for Helo. There's still one big event left in this season and it's one I've been waiting for. Overall, it's a good episode.

Okay, so I'm heading into the two part season finale and I'm just going to treat it like one episode. For those who are curious, I forgot to mention the quotes. I try to find one quote in each episode that stands out to me and reflects the plot of the episode. Sometimes it may just be a quote I like, but for the most part I'm going to try and keep it relevant. Anyway, my review for the season finale will likely be a little longer and I probably won't get to it right away. Oh and the population count has dropped and I'm not quite sure why. also, I listened for "Watchtower", but haven't quite heard it. The only time I thought maybe I heard it was when Leoben showed back up, which would make sense, but I'm not sure.

"See the face of the shape of things to come."

    01 x 14 & 15 "Kobol's Last Gleaming"

    Population 47, 897

    About the episode:
Alright, so we finally get to the moment I've been waiting for, but I'll get to that later. These two episodes are the culmination of everything preceding them. The crux of the finale is Boomer finding Kobol, which Leoben had told Starbuck they would find and that would lead them to Earth. After some initial recon, Roslin is presented a picture in which she sees a thriving civilization, but everyone else sees as ruins. Roslin believes now that the prophecies are true, that a dying leader will lead them to Earth. Roslin wants Starbuck to take the captured Cylon raider back to Caprica to find the arrow of Apollo which is supposed to have a clue as to the whereabouts of Earth.

Meanwhile, a Basestar appears as a recon mission to Kobol is underway. A raptor with Baltar, Chief, Calley and a few others on board is shot down and they are forced to make a crash landing while two other Raptors return to Galactica. Adama is set with a plan to take the Raider to the Basestar with a nuke that will destroy it. This is a plan concocted by Starbuck. When Starbuck is confronted by Roslin with her plan, she's left with a decision. After questioning Adama on whether he lied about knowing where Earth was, Starbuck decides to go with Roslin's plan and jumps to Caprica.

Following this, Adama realizes that Roslin convinced Starbuck to Caprica and attempts to have the President arrested. At the same time, he proceeds with the plan to nuke the Basestar. He recruits Boomer, who by the way, attempted suicide because she believes she's a Cylon. Boomer takes a Raptor inside the ship when she discovers several copies of herself and is finally told that she is in fact a Cylon. Boomer completes her mission and the Basestar is destroyed. She returns to the Galactica where Lee has been placed under arrest because he put a stop to the arrest of the President. And now we get to the moment I've been waiting for. As Adama is congratulating Boomer, Boomer shoots Adama twice. This must have been her mission all along. The episode ends on this cliffhanger.

    Caprica:
Back on Caprica, Helo is running from Sharon after discovering she's a Cylon, but Sharon catches up with him. Helo shoots Sharon, but keeps her alive because he believes she can help him get back to Galactica. Sharon leads them to a museum and Helo questions why they've gone there and Sharon reveals that the arrow of Apollo is located there and that it will lead them to Earth, but Helo doesn't believe Earth exists. Sharon then reveals to Helo that she is pregnant. Meanwhile, Starbuck arrives on Caprica also in search of the arrow and she finds it, but is confronted by Six. They get into a fight over the arrow, but Starbuck wins. At the same time, Helo and Sharon arrive while Starbuck is passed out. When she awakes she's greeted by Helo, but then sudenly sees Sharon and realizes she's a Cylon and draws her gun. Helo stops her and informs Starbuck that Sharon is Pregnant.

    Kobol:
On Kobol, Baltar is led by Head Six to an opera house where she reveals to Baltar that he is to be the gardian of a new step of evolution for humanity, a baby that will soon join them. Baltar is shown the face of the baby which leads to a state of euphoria for Baltar. Finally, part of God's plan is revealed.

    Verdict:
These two episodes are just great. This is the beginning of the mythology part of the show and the begging of music that will remain throughout the show. The show started off really strong and the season ended really strong. It truly does give us a glimpse of the shape of things to come. On to season two.

    "What's the plan?"

    02 x 01 "Scattered"

    About the episode:
Following the attack on Adama, Colonel Tigh is left in charge of the Galactica. Tigh decides to jump to safety as a Basestar closes in, leaving survivors on Kobol. Unfortunately once the jump is completed, it's suddenly realized that the rest of the fleet is missing. For Colonel Tigh, being in command is just not his thing and he makes it very clear that the Galactica is still Adama's ship. The clock is ticking since Adama is in dire need of surgery and the Doc is with the rest of the fleet. Lt. Gaeta comes up with a plan and saves the day in the end by finding the rest of the fleet.

    Caprica:
On Caprica not much is going on, but Starbuck is hell bent on killing Sharon. She's also sporting a sexy blood mustache as a result of the fight with Six.

    Kobol:
On Kobol the survivors are heading to a safe place where they can hold up until they are rescued, but they encounter some toasters. This is the beginning of a story line that leaves everyone involved damaged.

    Verdict:
This is a pretty good episode that ends also on a cliffhanger. There's definitely more to wrap up before moving on. It also has some good space battles.

"I fell in love with a machine."

    02 x 02 "Valley of Darkness"

    About the episode:
In this episode a handful of Toasters are on board and Adama is still down. Lee leads an assault on the Toasters and wins, but not without sacrifice.

    Caprica:
On Caprica Starbuck and Helo have been abandoned by Sharon and are in a search for a way off of Caprica. They stop by Starbuck's old home and this is where I think we hear hints of "Watchtower" on a music player that Starbuck plays. We also see a painting that will become important later.

    Kobol:
On Kobol, Chief and Calley reunite with the rest of the survivors after going back for a med kit to try and save one of their own. We get a "Saving Private Ryan" moment when Chief gives his fallen soldier a lethal dose of pain killers to spare him.

    Verdict:
This too is a good episode, but it lacks the strong punch that the finale gave us. There will be some really good episodes coming up later though.

    "Now you're a man."

    02 x 03 "Fragged"

    Population 47, 862

    About the episode:
Doc Cottle has finally arrived on the Galactica to preform surgery on Adama. Colonel Tigh is under pressure from the Quorum of twelve to see Roslin and maintain the government. Roslin is suffering from withdrawals and Tigh believes she's losing it and as a result, he allows the Quorum to see Roslin. Unfortunately for Tigh, Roslin is given the medicine she needs to function and makes a statement. She informs the Quorum about the phophecies and the plan to retrieve the arrow. In the end, Cottle informs Tigh that Adama will live and Tigh declares Marshall Law.

    Caprica:
This episode doesn't involve anything on Caprica.

    Kobol:
On Kobol is where the real action is. The survivors do some recon on the toasters and find out that they are building a surface to air missile that can shoot down any Raptors looking for the survivors. A plan is devised by the Lt., but it goes wrong. The Lt. points a gun to Callie's head and Baltar shoots him realizing that the Lt. was wrong about his plan. They then proceed with an alternate plan that the Chief had put forth and succeed just in time to be rescued by Lee.

    Verdict:
Again, this is a good episode, but not great, but it moves along development for Baltar.

    "Hi."

    02 x 04 "Resitance"

    About the episode:
This episode begins with Chief being interrogated and Tigh believes him to be a Cylon (:chris:) and throws him in a cell with Boomer. Meanwhile there's chaos among the fleet with half the fleet striking in resistance to Marshall Law ordered by Tigh. Lee and Roslin hatch a plan of escape and with a little help, are successful. Baltar is tasked with finding out if Chief is a Cylon and comes up with an inventive way of doing so by poisoning Chief and forcing Boomer to reveal that there are eight Cylons among the fleet. By doing this she shows her love for Chief. Ultimately though Callie pulls a Jack ruby and kills Boomer as she's being transported to a lab for testing. In the end, the old man wakes up and has a bit of a heart to heart with Tigh over Tigh fracking things up and promises to fix things together.

    Caprica:
On Caprica, Helo and Starbuck encounter a cell of resitance fighter that survived the attack. This is the point where we meet Anders. Anders is the leader of the resistance and a connection is quickly made between him and Starbuck. It turns out that there are fifty survivors on Caprica.

    Kobol:
    Nothing going on on Kobol.

    Verdict:
This too is a good episode that sets up the next phase of the story arc for retrieving the arrow. Anders will play an important role later on and when the time comes, I'll discuss how I feel about that role, but for now I'm just going to deal with what I saw in the episode. It's clear that Lee and Starbuck are taking different paths even though in season one it seemed like they would be "shipping" (I learned a new term). Also, this episode is the beginning of a story arc that will eventually lead to probably my favorite episode in the season and one of my favorites in the whole series. For now though, I'm still going to go with good. If I were doing half points, I would give this one half points.

    * I forgot, it's martial law. I'm glad I remembered that and nobody up-thread reminded me. * :P :doh:

"I never told you my call sign was Starbuck."

    02 x 05 "The Farm"

    Population 47, 857

    About the episode:
Well, Adama is back and is greeted with applause, but he's also pissed. He's pissed because Roslin escaped and he has mixed feelings over Boomer. Roslin sends out a message to the fleet saying she's going to Kobol to find the location of Earth and asks the fleet to join her. To Tigh's and presumably Adama's surprise, nearly one third of the fleet jumps to Kobol. We are pretty much left with that, the rest takes places on Caprica.

    Caprica:
On Caprica, Starbuck has been captured by Cylons and they are attempting to trick her into believing that she is in a resistance hospital, but she ain't buying it. She eventually escapes and is rescued by the resistance with a little help from Sharon who has returned. Sharon explains that the Cylons have been trying to make hybrids, but have been unsuccessful. Starbuck wants to remain on Caprica to destroy these farms that the Cylons created, but Anders gives her the arrow and convinces her to leave. Starbuck, Helo and Sharon leave on a Cylon ship.

    Kobol:
Nothing going on on Kobol, yet.

    Verdict:
This is not a bad episode, but not as good as the last few. It does explain why the Cylons set up Helo and Sharon, and it introduces Simon. This is the first episode where I do have some nitpicks. Starbuck and Anders, WTF? They've known each other for a few days at best and already have strong feelings for each other? What about her feelings for Lee which she clearly loves and has known a lot longer? Also, Anders has to stay behind? WTF? The ship that Sharon stole is a Cylon transport ship, they could have taken several people with them. If Starbuck is so in love with Anders, why not insist that he and his team mates come with them?

Okay, now we're at the episode I've been waiting for. This episode is one of my favorites, there's just something I love about it. This time, I'm going to review this two parter individually. I'm going to watch it now, but it's late and I'm tired so I'll write my review later.

Well, when you get to it, there's a few things to touch on.

If Kobol was the home world of everyone on the twelve colonies, where spaceflight was developed by somebody, it would have a heck of a lot more ruins than one opera house and a temple.

If their gods were so advanced, why did Apollo still use a bow?

Wouldn't the Arrow of Apollo be kind of like a .338 Lapua of Chris Kyle? It's expendable ordnance.

If Baltar can build a Cylon detector, and they've got so much advanced electronics, wouldn't they at least X-ray Apollo's arrow and then take it apart to figure out how it works, what it's interfaces are, and how any guidance system might work?

The show is mixing sci-fi and fantasy elements and those don't necessarily work well together. Suddenly a people obsessed with technology and the potential threats or advantages it might offer just turn that curiosity off because a device was once owned by somebody or something called "Apollo" in the distant past? Spock would be running scans on it, but the BSG crew goes on a holy quest. For all they know the arrow is a remote for a parlor trick set up as a tourist trap.

And why was the farm in a hospital and not on a Cylon base star? Was it just to create an excuse to have a rebellion that Starbuck can meet up with? If the Cylon plan was to occupy the colonies they wouldn't have nuked the heck out of all the colonies. Nuking the colonies was a good way to eliminate the human threat, but the Cylons really have no reason to take over a bunch of frozen yogurt shops. This seems to be part of "the plan" that never got thought out between the pitch and the first season's scripts.

At the character level, and for strange twists, the show works great most of the time. It's at the higher level of story that it gets really shaky. If you were to try to summarize the war in a couple of paragraphs for the history book, you really couldn't. It would be filled with clauses like "and then for some reason that was never really explained..." and "... so for some reason both sides decided to do something else, but it's not clear what they were trying to do to start with."

    I'll give it a shot.

The Cylons went to war with the Colonies the first time for reasons best known to them, unless the Colonials started it, which is also a possibility.

For some reason the war stopped without a decisive outcome.

Even though the Cylons, an advanced form of AI's, had nukes and were still out there, nobody seems to have done much in the way of nuclear preparedness.

For some reason the Cylons struck again. We're not really sure why, but they seemed intent on wiping out humanity - and occupying the colonies against Colonial resistance instead of just continuing to nuke the shit out of small towns.

They stubbornly continue pursuing one Colonial battlestar and a ragtag fleet that has a smaller population than Bumfuckville Caprica, even though the obsolete museum ship can't possibly represent a threat to them, since it's about 0.000001% of the human population they just wiped out in a day.

The humans become obsessed with returning to Kobol, the one planet where the Cylons would actually know to look for them.

That doesn't work out, so they head off to find Earth using a piece of magic that they don't even investigate.

More human form Cylons keep showing up in the fleet, the point of which can't be fathomed. Something about only true love can make a hybrid baby, the point of which is likewise unknown.

The Cylons decide that living in harmony under totalitarian military occupation is the way to go. No idea what the fuck they were thinking there.

The humans strike back instead of abandoning the worthless cretins who voted for Baltar, and they make off with a hybrid baby whose purpose is still unknown. It seems mostly to poop.

    Everybody hates each other.

More human Cylons keep popping up in the fleet, apparently embedded there for their whole lives, begging the question as to why the Cylons and humans needed a war to make a hybrid baby in the first place. Maybe they could have just gone to beach parties instead.

The humans eventually find Earth and it's been totally destroyed - by different Cylons, except that the humans there were actually Cylons the whole time. Try figuring that one out. It goes unexplained. Maybe something about banking.

So the humans still need to find a home, they're up to their ears in human form Cylons, and not a one of them knows a goddamn thing about what any of them should do, except perhaps for the AI chick in the bathtub who keeps saying "end of line," but none of them can figure out what she's babbling about, so she's as useless as any of them.

So they settle on a ramming attack, but then Starbuck remembers a song in her head that happens to be the whole point of the journey. She could have whipped it out in season 1 but she was just screwing with everybody because it turns out she's probably a trans-dimensional character from a different franchise who is slumming because she broke up with Thor.

Freed from the Cylon menace, the human plan is to scatter to the four winds of our planet, forget technology, medicine, and toilet paper, and die of mosquito borne illnesses in various god forsaken swamps. Even the original Cylon plan must have made more sense than that.

But the show had good music, interesting characters, good special effects, moral questions, and great acting, so we don't mind that they all die in a swamp because not a goddamn one of them knows how to cook a squirrel. Meanwhile the pursuing Cylons they made a treaty with leave an orbital warning beacon saying "Stay away. The humans on this planet are fucking retarded. We think they snapped sometime in season 3."

"I'm putting the fleet back together, I'm putting our family back together, this ends now."

    02 x 06 "Home Part 1"

    Population 47, 857

    About the episode:
In the aftermath of the fleet jumping to Kobol, Adama assesses what has been lost while Roslin attempts to calm the quorum. Around the same moment Starbuck returns with Helo and Sharon. Sharon is placed in a holding cell and is kept alive because she claims she can find the tomb of Athena. On board Galactica, Adama has found a new CAG to replace Apollo, but he falls short and just isn't up to the job. Ultimately Adama realizes that things have gone too far and wants to reunite the fleet.

    Caprica:
We're done with Caprica for now.

    Kobol:
Roslin and her team which includes the priestess, Lee, Starbuck, Sharon, Helo, Zarack and Zarack's henchman have landed on Kobol and set off on their journey. Then then come under attack by Cylons and the priestess dies. Sharon proves her worth by saving the group and killing the Cylons. Sharon is now the only one who can lead them to the tomb of Athena.

    Verdict:
This episode again was good and filled with emotion. When Starbuck returns Lee greets her with a kiss, but things have clearly changed with Starbuck now that she's met Anders. I still don't get that, but whatever. She basically sits around moping the whole episode. This is the beginning of the turn around point for Sharon and I'm glad she's staying on. I like her relationship with Helo. Also, I like the mythology of the show so far. I'm a firm believer in that there is some truth to myths and even bible stories, so I like how this is a mix of SCIFI and fantasy that in my opinion plays well. This is another episode that if I were giving half ratings, I would.

"We may have gone down separately, but we're coming back together."

    02 x 07 "Home Part 2"

    Population 47, 855

    Kobol:
This episode takes place almost entirely on Kobol. It starts off with Roslin and crew hiking through the pouring rain up hill while Adama is trying to figure out exactly where she's going. Meanwhile Baltar is questioning Head Six and is frustrated with her riddles. She then turns on him and makes him thingk that he's just crazy after all and there is no chip in his brain. Zarack's henchman is attempting to pull some shit so that Zarack will be in charge of the fleet and tries to recruit Sharon. As the crew rests, they hear a noise and Adama shows up. He and Lee hug and they reconcile their differences. Adama sees Sharon and tries to kill her, but is stopped. Sharon then realizes she needs to make a grand guesture to prove she's not a danger so she shoots Zarrack's man as he is attempting to shoot Lee, she then explains that she is different and makes her own choices and hands Adama the gun. The crew then proceed to go inside the tomb where they find a map to earth which shows the twelve constellations and a nebula where Earth is located. The episode ends with a welcoming back of Roslin and Head Six finally revealing to Baltar that she is in fact angel.

    Verdict:
I really love this episode. It starts with a goo juxtaposition where it goes back and forth between the Kobol expedition and the Galactica and Adama trying to pinpoint where Roslin may be. This is accompanied with beautiful music that fits the scene and the pacing so well. I really love the scene where Lee and Adama reunite and the scene where Sharon hands over the gun. This episode is just crafted so well. Like I said up thread, It's one of my favorites in the series. Once again, I would give half points if I could. It's definitely a step above the previous episodes.
