I certainly don't agree with a lot of what Reagan did, but I don't see how anyone can deny that he was able to tap into something that people were feeling for quite some time. And this actually gives me some hope for an Obama presidency, since he can fairly assess people, regardless of whether it will be popular with certain constituents or not.

Whether you liked the changes or not, you really can't deny that Reagan was change. It was Morning in America; whether you wanted to get up or not is another matter.

As for Edwards, I await the day he finally realizes it just ain't gonna happen for him.

    Yep...that's pretty much spot on.

This shows why Edwards is better than Obama.

It shows nothing of the sort. I didn't love Reagan, but to deny him as an agent of change — one wanted very badly by a large majority of the people of this country — is to completely not understand the history and people of this country. Obama's comments are both accurate and the best gauge of his ability to see and learn from history.

If anything, it does indeed show that Obama is a sharp politician. AND definitely not the negative stereotype. His speech back at the Democratic convention and comments like this make me fear for Republican influence. He and his type have the best chance to hand us our heads.

Obama's playing towards the general election already, and all he does is praise Reagan for being a shrewd politician.

Huh? How do you come up with that bit of logic? :mystery:

Agreed. That definately puts a plus sign beside Obama's name for me, so far, anyway.

That he's already reaching out, while Edwards and Clinton bite at his ankles, speaks volumes.

Pretty ballsey move IMO, especially if Obama's hoping on the black vote.
He seems pretty sharp (or crazy).

I agree with what he says but I don't think it'll do him any favors in the primaries.

This is very interesting. My opinion of the man just went up another notch. The Republicans really don't have anyone that gives me a boner. I just can't get past his complete lack of experience, some of his wishy-washy answers on terror early in the campaign, and I need to know if I can deal with his views on guns and, to a lesser degree, abortion.

[edit: Oh, and Edwards reaction shows that he shouldn't be the President of the Junior Varsity Special Ed Debating Team, let alone of the United States.]

Because he'll take a cheap soundbite over thoughtful analysis?

Jeez, Obama didn't even say Reagan's change was good.

Edwards' comments here remind me of some of the eyeroll-inducing attacks Romney's been making on McCain.

Huh? It certainly reads like that to me.

Obama is trying to be all things to all men. He's the one using cheap tactics. At least Edwards has some policy positions.

That's personality politics for you. Reagan had "charisma". It's the same reason Obama stands a good chances of winning, incidentally.

[edit: to evenflow]^Yep, and that was his reelection to a second term. Nobody has any business claiming Mr. Reagan wasn't embraced by the vast majority of folk.

Obama's had my vote for awhile now. I don't agree with some of his policies, but the guy's got charisma and seems more genuine to me than all the other phoney-baloney political hacks who are running against him.

Lowering taxes and an uptick in the economy weren't "economic policy"?

Granted following Carter was a dream, since he had driven the economy as well as the foreign policy into a wall, but hey, that's what we get for electing Carter. Now there was some personality politics.

A large majority of people in this country wanted Mr. Reagan. Your denial is... well, ridiculous.

You misunderstand. I'm not denying that people "wanted Mr. Reagan". I'm disputing why they wanted him.

Opinion polls show that the views of the majority of the population in the US are diametrically opposed to those promoted by the establishment on most issues.

People feel that the democratic process does not work. To the extent that they participate at all, they do so based on the personalities involved. That's why Hilary gets a spike when she starts crying, why John Kerry couldn't even beat a fuckup like George Bush and why Ronnie Reagan got elected.
