No, but I don't see Haiti as America's responsibility in the long term. Sure, short term aid for medicine and emergency shelter, but not rebuilding. They need to rebuild for themselves. Along with that will come pride and strength.

You seem a tad obsessed with the issue, and in opposing help for Haiti. It makes you look very bad, particularly when you bring it up in an irrelevant context such as this one.

Its just as relavent as those who have said, "we can send a man to the moon but we can't give help to [insert cause here]" ,that they have used to beat down the space program since Armstrong's landing.

    You surprise me enlisted person...

With all the time in you spent in the military, I would think that you of all people would know and understand how this great nation of ours operates:

The US Govt doesnt give ANYTHING to ANYBODY without getting something of either equal or greater value in return.

Do you think that our Military was actually sent to Haiti for the sole purpose of "Drop off supplies"?

You should go back and listen to what Emporer Hugo receintly said down in venusuela (minus the CIA changing the weather part)

The ridiculous thing is the money for NASA is a pittance compared to the waste and BS he is spending billions on. To give up and return the space program to zero is beyond dumb, and is in fact Obama as he is the very definition of beyond dumb. Take a program with 5 years and billions in it and kill it so we can eventually start something else from scratch.

I guess he'd rather have something new and reliable, then something old that keeps blowing up!

Well it is OUR tax money the government is squandering. They can't balance the budget and spend like it'll never catch up with them, but hell... help the Haitians, absolutely. Can't have the UN and EU and Henry angry with us. Nobody's asking Cuba for help and they're "much closer."

Actually, Cuba have sent help, and also opened their airspace for US aircraft so that that aid could be delivered more efficiently.

    Give the Cubans credit.

After all, they have their own people to oppress and keep poor.

clap clap clap. Yay Cuba. :lanz: Still changes nothing. I wonder how much all this goddamn fuel is costing us to deliver aid to Haiti from their bases? We gotta get them down there first, get them to Haiti and then get them back. Just thinking about the "fuel bill" makes my gas price complaints look like dimes and nickels... And Washington still thinks it's a metaphysical Princess Diana-like spender. And hell, even she found ways to cut corners.

Regardless of the politics of it, it's kinda sad for me. Born in 1967, my early years was all about the Apollo Program, I drank Tang, wanted a space pen, and was born and bred on Star Trek. Probably one of the factors that led me to serve in the USAF. I'd like to think McCain would not have cancelled this, but who knows. I'm not sure how this will affect or delay future space tourism, but it certainly won't help. I was hoping that in my twilight years there would be an affordable senior citizen tour or even low-g retirement homes with some mean hydroponic space-kush.:sorrow:

So the following will remain the last words spoken on the moon for quite some time...

Apollo 17 astronaut Eugene Cernan on surface the moon:

Bob, this is Gene, and I'm on the surface; and, as I take man's last step from the surface, back home for some time to come - but we believe not too long into the future - I'd like to just (say) what I believe history will record. That America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow. And, as we leave the Moon at Taurus-Littrow, we leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind. "Godspeed the crew of Apollo 17."

The last words before liftoff (that are debatable but very cool).

Cernan:"Let's get this mother out of here."

Now I have had time to think about it, what would people here do in Obamas position?
The Augustine Commission ran all the numbers and came to the conclusion that there simply wasn't enough money to execute the current plans. It isn't just as simple as asking for all the money needed, because Bush already did that and congress wouldn't authorise the NASA budget he wanted.
